Got a case of the fly-aways? A mane that just can’t be tamed?
Oh my friend, I feel ya.
I may have straight hair but I’ve always struggled with frizz. And so over the years, I tried smoothing hair product after smoothing hair product, looking for the holy grail.
Much like my struggle with adult acne and my search for the the perfect topical solution, it wasn’t until I turned towards oils that I found what I was looking for!
Since using oils — and this DIY All-Natural Hair Serum for Frizzy hair in particular — my hair has never been smoother or healthier.
And upon inspecting the ingredient label of my favorite smoothing hair serum, I soon realized: hey, this sounds like something I could make pretty easily!
So if you’ve been wondering “How can I make my own hair oil?” oh you’re in the right place…
IN THIS BLOG POST, YOU’LL FIND:
What is the best oil for your hair?
Take a peek at the back of any store-bought hair oils or hair serums, and you’ll notice a few all-star oils over and over again.
OLIVE OIL FOR HAIR
Olive oil is a staple in the kitchen but… is olive oil good for hair?
Olive oil has protective and nutritional qualities that help hair look and feel healthier.
Not only does it deeply moisturize hair and prevent split ends, but its natural antibacterial properties may support a healthy scalp and reduce dandruff.
ARGAN OIL FOR HAIR
Argan oil is often referred to as “liquid gold” thanks to its skincare and haircare benefits.
It’s packed with fatty acids and powerful antioxidants, such as vitamin E, that have been shown to have benefits for your scalp and hair.
Best of all, it’s lightweight and quickly absorbed into the hair shaft, and so won’t leave you looking like an oil slick!
JOJOBA OIL FOR HAIR
Jojobs oil is actually a liquid wax. Like argan and olive oil, it helps protect hair, preventing dryness, breakage, and split ends.
Jojoba is rich in vitamins and minerals that nourish hair, including vitamin C, B vitamins, vitamin E, copper, and zinc.
Like argan oil, jojoba oil is extremely lightweight and easily absorbed into the hair, leaving it healthy and moisturized without weighing it down.
What about essential oils? Which essential oils are best for your hair?
LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL FOR HAIR
One study found that lavender essential significantly increased the number of hair follicles and deepened the depth of hair follicles, reducing hair fallout and increasing overall thickness.
PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL FOR HAIR
Another study found that peppermint essential oil did the same. Though this serum is applied to the ends of hair rather than directly to the scalp, some of the oil may naturally migrate to the scalp with brushing.
Not only does this DIY hair serum reduce frizz, but it protects and nourishes hair too.
Combined, jojoba oil, argan oil, and olive oil deeply nourish hair without leaving it looking or feeling greasy, which I’m sure we’ll all agree is something we want to avoid!
Lavender and peppermint essential oils aren’t just included to add some natural fragrance to the DIY hair serum — both have been found to help promote hair growth.
- 1/2 oz (1 tablespoon) organic jojoba oil
- 1/2 oz (1 tablespoon) organic argan oil
- 1 oz (2 tablespoons) olive oil*
- 16 drops organic lavender essential oil
- 10 drops organic peppermint essential oil
*Yes, go ahead and pull that bottle of olive oil out from the pantry!
You’ll also need a small bottle or jar. I recommend a 2 oz glass dropper bottle.
- Combine all ingredients into your bottle or jar.
- Shake gently to mix all of the ingredients together.
- Apply a dime- to quarter-sized amount of oil to damp hair, concentrating most on the ends.
I’ve found that using a brush made with natural boar bristle helps to distribute the serum and my hair’s own natural oils, helping to reduce frizz even more! I definitely suggest giving it a shot.
