Got a case of the fly-aways? A mane that just can’t be tamed?

Oh my friend, I feel ya.

I may have straight hair but I’ve always struggled with frizz. And so over the years, I tried smoothing hair product after smoothing hair product, looking for the holy grail.

Much like my struggle with adult acne and my search for the the perfect topical solution, it wasn’t until I turned towards oils that I found what I was looking for!

Since using oils — and this DIY All-Natural Hair Serum for Frizzy hair in particular — my hair has never been smoother or healthier.

And upon inspecting the ingredient label of my favorite smoothing hair serum, I soon realized: hey, this sounds like something I could make pretty easily!

So if you’ve been wondering “How can I make my own hair oil?” oh you’re in the right place

What is the best oil for your hair?

Take a peek at the back of any store-bought hair oils or hair serums, and you’ll notice a few all-star oils over and over again.

OLIVE OIL FOR HAIR

Olive oil is a staple in the kitchen but… is olive oil good for hair?

Olive oil has protective and nutritional qualities that help hair look and feel healthier.

Not only does it deeply moisturize hair and prevent split ends, but its natural antibacterial properties may support a healthy scalp and reduce dandruff.

ARGAN OIL FOR HAIR

Argan oil is often referred to as “liquid gold” thanks to its skincare and haircare benefits.

It’s packed with fatty acids and powerful antioxidants, such as vitamin E, that have been shown to have benefits for your scalp and hair.

Best of all, it’s lightweight and quickly absorbed into the hair shaft, and so won’t leave you looking like an oil slick!

JOJOBA OIL FOR HAIR

Jojobs oil is actually a liquid wax. Like argan and olive oil, it helps protect hair, preventing dryness, breakage, and split ends.

Jojoba is rich in vitamins and minerals that nourish hair, including vitamin C, B vitamins, vitamin E, copper, and zinc.

Like argan oil, jojoba oil is extremely lightweight and easily absorbed into the hair, leaving it healthy and moisturized without weighing it down.

What about essential oils? Which essential oils are best for your hair?

LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL FOR HAIR

One study found that lavender essential significantly increased the number of hair follicles and deepened the depth of hair follicles, reducing hair fallout and increasing overall thickness.

PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL FOR HAIR

Another study found that peppermint essential oil did the same. Though this serum is applied to the ends of hair rather than directly to the scalp, some of the oil may naturally migrate to the scalp with brushing.

Not only does this DIY hair serum reduce frizz, but it protects and nourishes hair too.

DIY Natural Hair Serum For Frizzy Hair

Combined, jojoba oil, argan oil, and olive oil deeply nourish hair without leaving it looking or feeling greasy, which I’m sure we’ll all agree is something we want to avoid!

Lavender and peppermint essential oils aren’t just included to add some natural fragrance to the DIY hair serum — both have been found to help promote hair growth.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 oz (1 tablespoon) organic jojoba oil
  • 1/2 oz (1 tablespoon) organic argan oil
  • 1 oz (2 tablespoons) olive oil*
  • 16 drops organic lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops organic peppermint essential oil

*Yes, go ahead and pull that bottle of olive oil out from the pantry!

You’ll also need a small bottle or jar. I recommend a 2 oz glass dropper bottle.

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Combine all ingredients into your bottle or jar.
  2. Shake gently to mix all of the ingredients together.
  3. Apply a dime- to quarter-sized amount of oil to damp hair, concentrating most on the ends.

NOTES:

I’ve found that using a brush made with natural boar bristle helps to distribute the serum and my hair’s own natural oils, helping to reduce frizz even more! I definitely suggest giving it a shot.

  1. Hey Nadia,
Can i use this recipe with leave in conditioner or would the oil mixture be enough??

  2. PS. If the feeling does return I will try it without the essential oils, although I’d hate to leave out the highly recommended lavender of course. 😉 Fortunately my hair is quite healthy already.

  3. Hello Nadia!
It’s actually a lot better now. I haven’t exactly determined the cause of the tickly itchy feeling, but since the skin on my scalp kept looking healthy I didn’t think too much of it.
It’s either my skin-type hayfever acting up (apparently there’s a couple of early trees blooming right now), or the weekly mild shampooing session solved it, or it really just takes a few days to get used to and then done.

I am very glad though – using it on the eyebrows as well because one of my eyebrows is super pretty and the other one is a little scraggly. The skin underneath there is not showing any signs of problems either.

So I think everything is fine!

  4. So glad to hear it, Marianna! Hm that’s interesting… would you be willing to try just the castor oil and see if the feeling goes away? Then you’ll know if it’s the essential oils for sure. Truthfully, I’m not sure why it would cause your scalp to feel that way. I’d say best to maybe pull them out of the mixture if that’s what’s causing it. (The castor oil is the biggie in the recipe in terms of hair smoothing anyway.)

  5. Hi Nadia,
I’ve been using this since yesterday and the results are amazing! I have very curly frizzy hair and the frizz has been reduced by at least 90% if not more…

However, the skin on my head is very tingly and tickly, do you think that might be lavender’s healing properties or something else? I read you can’t REALLY be allergic to essential oils, especially not if diluted into other oils, so I’m wondering if this is just something I need to go through.

  6. My daughter is 6 years old and she has blessed/cursed with beautiful thick, curly hair and LOTS of it. We live in Florida so humidity is our enemy, I haven’t been able to find a product or combination of products to keep her hair moisturized and shiny.
Do you think this might help?

  7. Cannot wait to try this! I found a great serum by Gjarrah that says it includes Keratin (? what is that?) and almond oll. This stuff is magic and changed my life! No longer do I need to “hide” my curly, dry, brittle frizz with blow drying at every wash, but instead get to enjoy the natural, soft curls that are also actually a lot fuller than the style I’ve worn all my 61 years! I was sooo disappointed to find the product seems to have been discontinued but excited to try this great idea! I’ll keep you posted! Thanks, Alex and Nadia!!

  8. Yes Castor Oil is very nice, but one has to use special pillow cover if your leaving your hair with the oil on. It is also very thick so will not always work on curly hairs. There might be some fact that it might help grow hair by preventing hair damage or by repairing the damaged hair, but from my experience I felt it just makes your hair so sticky, that it’s more of preventing the normal hair fall. Also, I would like to say it is not good idea to mix two oils together. We read so much on internet mixing two oils but that’s not what is good for hair. Even mixing other stuff like aloe vera gel or honey with any other oil is not the perfect type of hair care. Use one thing at a time. Wash hair. And then apply the next after a week or so.

  9. I’ve got this beautiful mane that needs taming. If I dont use mousse and jel I have a frizz bomb go off on my head. I call it the medatreanian cuse. I’m going to try this method and let you know how it works with this mane.

  10. Hi,
Castor oil is sticky in nature, does it make your hair sticky or oily when apply on wet hair?

  11. Hi, Robin. Sorry for the super belated reply! Yes, that is something that has come to my attention recently as well. I think you do need to be careful with supplements – I am always sure to check the reviews and order through Amazon Prime which usually allows me to return a product or will refund me if something is wrong with it (only happened twice and cookware items!).

  12. I’ve been looking for a natural serum for frizz today online and also found castor oil recommended somewhere else. The problem is that the production of castor oil is a dangerous process often done in countries where workers aren’t protected by laws and there are human rights concerns regarding this (do a google search for ‘castor oil production harmful to workers’). The workers often suffer harmful side effects. Please don’t recommend it’s use. We have everything here in the US and there are other alternatives. Argan oil in small amounts, camellia oil, avocado oil and coconut oil, eggs, mayonnaise treatments. I have had success with most of those, going to try camellia oil next.

  13. The serum for frizzy hair – do you apply this after washing and before styling? Thanks.
