What is the best oil for your hair?
Take a peek at the back of any store-bought hair oils or hair serums, and you’ll notice a few all-star oils over and over again.
OLIVE OIL FOR HAIR
Olive oil is a staple in the kitchen but… is olive oil good for hair?
Olive oil has protective and nutritional qualities that help hair look and feel healthier.
Not only does it deeply moisturize hair and prevent split ends, but its natural antibacterial properties may support a healthy scalp and reduce dandruff.
ARGAN OIL FOR HAIR
Argan oil is often referred to as “liquid gold” thanks to its skincare and haircare benefits.
It’s packed with fatty acids and powerful antioxidants, such as vitamin E, that have been shown to have benefits for your scalp and hair.
Best of all, it’s lightweight and quickly absorbed into the hair shaft, and so won’t leave you looking like an oil slick!
JOJOBA OIL FOR HAIR
Jojobs oil is actually a liquid wax. Like argan and olive oil, it helps protect hair, preventing dryness, breakage, and split ends.
Jojoba is rich in vitamins and minerals that nourish hair, including vitamin C, B vitamins, vitamin E, copper, and zinc.
Like argan oil, jojoba oil is extremely lightweight and easily absorbed into the hair, leaving it healthy and moisturized without weighing it down.
What about essential oils? Which essential oils are best for your hair?

LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL FOR HAIR
One study found that lavender essential significantly increased the number of hair follicles and deepened the depth of hair follicles, reducing hair fallout and increasing overall thickness.
PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL FOR HAIR
Another study found that peppermint essential oil did the same. Though this serum is applied to the ends of hair rather than directly to the scalp, some of the oil may naturally migrate to the scalp with brushing.
Not only does this DIY hair serum reduce frizz, but it protects and nourishes hair too.
Combined, jojoba oil, argan oil, and olive oil deeply nourish hair without leaving it looking or feeling greasy, which I’m sure we’ll all agree is something we want to avoid!
Lavender and peppermint essential oils aren’t just included to add some natural fragrance to the DIY hair serum — both have been found to help promote hair growth.
INGREDIENTS:
- 1/2 oz (1 tablespoon) organic jojoba oil
- 1/2 oz (1 tablespoon) organic argan oil
- 1 oz (2 tablespoons) olive oil*
- 16 drops organic lavender essential oil
- 10 drops organic peppermint essential oil
*Yes, go ahead and pull that bottle of olive oil out from the pantry!
You’ll also need a small bottle or jar. I recommend a 2 oz glass dropper bottle.
DIRECTIONS:
- Combine all ingredients into your bottle or jar.
- Shake gently to mix all of the ingredients together.
- Apply a dime- to quarter-sized amount of oil to damp hair, concentrating most on the ends.
NOTES:
I’ve found that using a brush made with natural boar bristle helps to distribute the serum and my hair’s own natural oils, helping to reduce frizz even more! I definitely suggest giving it a shot.

Hi,
Will this work on frizzy loose ringleted hair? Just wondering because i don’t want to make it if it won’t work.
Thanks
Hey, Tiffany! Hmmmm I’m not quite sure so I just tried to do a bit of research. I see that coconut oil supposedly strips color from hair, but did not see anything for the ingredients in this DIY.
Side note: do you use natural color? I REALLY want to do a post about that soon and am just curious!
Nadia, I’m glad I found this and can’t wait to try it. But I’m wondering would it be ok for color treated hair, ya think?
I would love to know how if that serum could be applied as a mask over night for hair loss.
Thanks very much.
Just wondering how you feel about ordering off of Amazon. I have always loved Amazon until I recently read an article warning not to order natural supplements from Amazon because they relabel expired bottles or get supplements from not reliable sources. It makes me wonder about ordering oils etc. from there as well.
Thanks for your input! Love your site and would love to see more about DIYs for wrinkles.

Awesome!! Thanks so much for sharing, Malini!
What a fantastic recipe for hair serum. It’s less than a month since I started using it as a hair serum after washing hair and as a deep moisturising scalp treatment before a hair wash. The results are amazing. My hair has the most brilliant natural shine and has become soft as silk. There so much new hair growth as well.
Thank you for this wonderful recipe!
I am looking for some great anti-aging, anti-wrinkle products for eyes and face for over 50 skin. Thoughts?
Wow, Deb — thanks for sharing! So glad you’ve had success with castor oil for hair loss.
I had sudden inexplicable hair loss, probably related to stress. I read about castor oil and started using it on my scalp every night — just my scalp. The first place I noticed new growth was at my temples — just peach fuzz, but it eventually grew out longer. Then the top of my head starting showing new growth. I could really tell the difference after a couple of months. As for my eyelashes, they got thicker and longer as did my nails. I don’t know what castor oil does, but it works. It doesn’t just keep your hair from breaking, it actually grows back hair that you lose from stress or poor diet.
Well I love jojoba oil and it does absorb well so I think that could work!
Hi Nadia,
I chanced upon your blog and love all these simple au-naturale DYI idea!
What do you think of substituting castor oil with jojoba oil?
Great! Let us know if it works for you 🙂
I cant wait to try this! I’ve had no luck with coconut oil either!
I like to use my hair oils on wet hair!
Hi Nadia,
I’m curious if you use this straight out of the shower with wet hair, damp hair or dry hair.
Appreciate your fabulous (and very helpful) posts!
Thanks,
Rose
Sorry for the slightly terrible grammar in that last post.
Castor oil? I’m newly looking into essential oils and various carrier oils etc to solve my various beauty ailments naturally. This is the first I’m hearing of the use of castor oil but my understanding of castor oil made me rather surprised by the idea of using it on my body. Totally a preconception and I’m more than open to looking into using it and finding organic versions etc. One thing I am especially concerned about, and please correct me if I’m wrong here, but aren’t there extremely harmful effects on the people who harvest the castor beans? I know that the harmful substances in the beans are inactivated during production and it won’t harm me but I can’t ethically use a product that I know substantial amounts of uninformed/desperate women in third world countries are being harmed in order to produce it. Do you know if there are ethical ways of producing the oil and any brands I could look for?
I’m using coconut oil to control my fizz for the past week with little success. I guess I should try using castor oil instead!
Are you using the brush to help control how much you’re getting out from the bottle? I’m very worried to have too much on my hair which makes it looks very flat, oily and untidy.
Nadia, I love your Ideas, I have been using oils for the last two months and sadly I am spottier than before I started, I must be using the wrong products or the wrong ratio. I wash my face at night with castor oil, may add jojoba oil, lavender oil,(I don’t measure just pour into my hand) wash off with a hot flannel then it is only now I rinse face with cold water to close the pores (never knew I had to). Afterwards I dab on Lemon essential oil, lavender and tamanu and occasionally tea tree. I am 55 years with acne scarring and the occasional breakouts, and wrinkles which I would love to make disappear or soften. please advise step by step.
