Homemade Natural Clarifying Foaming Facewash recipe

This DIY All-Natural Toning & Clarifying Foaming Facewash cleanses and keeps skin clear using just a few simple, natural ingredients! Some — like honey and tea tree oil — are tried-and-true natural remedies for acne and blemishes, making this homemade facewash recipe the perfect addition to your anti-acne and all-natural skincare routine.

Let’s take a closer look…

I made a lot of mistakes in my teens and early twenties…

I ate a lot of heavily-processed “health” food, skipped quite a few classes while nursing hangovers (sorry, Mom and Dad!), and spent a small fortune on harsh, chemical-laden skincare products that only contributed to my breakouts and my body burden. Oh, regrets!

Luckily, now I’m (a little) older and (a lot) wiser.

After struggling with breakouts for years, I finally achieved clear skin after totally overhauling my beauty routine.

(Ok AND my diet — check out my new book all about leveraging nutrition for skin health and to remedy the internal imbalances that trigger common skin issues!)

By simplifying to a few natural and gentle skincare products, I was finally able to get clear skin.

This foaming facial cleanser is an important part of my super-simple all-natural skincare and beauty routine. It includes ingredients that help clarify and tone the skin, as well as ingredients that are extra-gentle and help maintain skin’s natural balance.

DIY All-Natural Toning & Clarifying Foaming Facewash

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup filtered or previously boiled (now room temp) water
  • 1/4 cup liquid castile soap: an all-natural, extremely concentrated soap made from 100% plant oils.
  • 5 teaspoons jojoba oil or another facial oil of choice (check out The Best Face Oils By Skin Type for some alternatives)
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey: a wonderful antibacterial that helps to gently eliminate breakout-causing bacterial, and also helps calm the skin. This gives the wash its honey color.
  • 1 teaspoon tea tree oil: another great, all-natural antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal that will not only keep acne-causing bacteria in check, but also help preserve the wash.
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil: great for all skin types, it helps calm inflammation and eliminate bacteria.
  • 10 drops rosemary essential oil: another great, all-natural antibacterial.

Note: this is the combination of ingredients that works well for my skin and the combination can be adjusted depending on your skin-type. For example, if you have drier skin, you may need less castile/more water and/or oil. Everybody is different and DIYs can sometimes be a game of trial and error. Luckily, once you have a base such as this one, you can easily add ingredients if necessary!

DIRECTIONS

Add the ingredients in the order listed (if you add the soap before the water, it will become a sudsy explosion!). Stir the mixture gently, mixing everything together. The castile soap and honey will cause the mixture to look cloudy. Put the mixture into your foaming soap dispenser and your facewash is complete!

1 or 2 pumps is all you need as the castile soap is very concentrated. Use once or twice daily (I use it once a day at night).

Discard the contents after a month or if you notice any unfavorable changes. The mixture will separate, so give it a little shake before each use!

Follow with toner and a moisturizer, like Body Unburdened Beauty Blend No.2 for oily and acne-prone skin.

  1. I tried reading most of the comments before asking, I see the “use of the essential oils as preservatives” for it not to go “bad”. Since I don’t use make up and barely sweat, I usually don’t wash my face more than once or twice a week being that using reg. soap leaves it feeling extremely dry. I don’t want this to go bad on me, how long till you thing its no good?

  2. Thank you so much for sharing! Do you use just your hands to wash your face or some sort of scrubber or washcloth?

  3. Hi, can you include a bit of peppermint in this recipe? I couldn’t find anything but peppermint castile soap at the any of my grocery stores.

  4. Hi Nadia!

love your recipe and can’t wait to try it. Can you recommend another antibacterial oil instead of rosemary? Will Rosehip do?

    Thanks!

  5. Hi Nadia!

Do you have recipes for a non-foaming face wash (more than castile soap and water) and a non-foaming body wash?

I looked throughout your website the best I could and through your responses on this post, but I didn’t find either of those 2 things/recipes.

  6. My tips would be to make sure everything is very sterile beforehand; to discard as soon as you notice a change in odor, color, or consistency; and yes, to make a smaller batch!!

If you have a natural preservative on hand and know the appropriate ratio, by all means use it!

  7. I just made this face wash, cannot wait to try it out tonight. Just a little bit worried about mold and bacteria growing there since there is no preservative? Do you think I could add some? It feels like a waste throwing so many wonderful ingredients away after a month… Do you have any tips for that? Have you tried making it last longer? Or maybe making smaller batches that last exactly a month? Thanks for any tips on that 🙂

  8. Super excited to try out this face wash after reading the commments. I just tried my first batch and it came out foamy and looked great but I felt like it sank straight in to my skin so I couldn’t wash my face with it if that makes sense? I’m wondering if anyone has had this before and if so what I need to add more of? Thanks so much

  9. hi! could you tell us about the cleansing pads seen in the photos you’ve shown here? where do you get them/are they reusable?

  10. Hello Sis!

I think I would like to make this recipe. But how long should I’ll be using the finished product? Days, weeks or months?

    Thank you!

  11. Hi. Question: Can this be used as an all-in-one face and body wash? If not, do you have any suggestions on modifying the recipe so that it will work on both face and body?

  12. Hi, Renee! I’m so sorry to hear that!! Two things: 1) is there bacteria growth? Did you sterilize your bottle beforehand? If you see any change in smell, texture, or color, throw it away immediately. 2) Everyone’s skin is different and what works for some people won’t work for others! You shouldn’t feel discouraged – there’s a great natural product out there just for you! And if this DIY doesn’t work for you, you can use all of the ingredients you purchased on your body, which is always less likely to react than your face.

  13. I purchased all the ingredients from whole foods about 4 weeks ago and followed the recipe except added 2 drops of orange essential oil as the aroma was not very pleasing to my nose initially. I am breaking out worse than I ever have, not sure what to do next or how to adjust… a little disappointed at the natural experience …

  14. Hello! I have a quick question for you, and I would love your wisdom and tips! I typically clean my face with a mixture of 2/3 jojoba oil and 1/3 rosehip essential oil, but I am wondering if that is okay for my skin. I think I need to try a new mixture, maybe more of a “wash” kind instead of that mixture, which I just put on my face before bed after simply washing with warm water. I don’t have acne prone skin, but I do occasionally get a few big painful ones on my cheeks. I also think I have pretty big pores, and can tend to get clogged around my cheeks and lips. Do you (or anyone else reading this) have a recommendation on the kind of face wash I should make? I also just moved to Australia so I don’t have my old ingredients handy with me, like the rosehip and the jojoba.
    Thank you in advance!!
