Homemade Natural Clarifying Foaming Facewash recipe

This DIY All-Natural Toning & Clarifying Foaming Facewash cleanses and keeps skin clear using just a few simple, natural ingredients! Some — like honey and tea tree oil — are tried-and-true natural remedies for acne and blemishes, making this homemade facewash recipe the perfect addition to your anti-acne and all-natural skincare routine.

Let’s take a closer look…

I made a lot of mistakes in my teens and early twenties…

I ate a lot of heavily-processed “health” food, skipped quite a few classes while nursing hangovers (sorry, Mom and Dad!), and spent a small fortune on harsh, chemical-laden skincare products that only contributed to my breakouts and my body burden. Oh, regrets!

Luckily, now I’m (a little) older and (a lot) wiser.

After struggling with breakouts for years, I finally achieved clear skin after totally overhauling my beauty routine.

(Ok AND my diet — check out my new book all about leveraging nutrition for skin health and to remedy the internal imbalances that trigger common skin issues!)

By simplifying to a few natural and gentle skincare products, I was finally able to get clear skin.

This foaming facial cleanser is an important part of my super-simple all-natural skincare and beauty routine. It includes ingredients that help clarify and tone the skin, as well as ingredients that are extra-gentle and help maintain skin’s natural balance.

DIY All-Natural Toning & Clarifying Foaming Facewash

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup filtered or previously boiled (now room temp) water
  • 1/4 cup liquid castile soap: an all-natural, extremely concentrated soap made from 100% plant oils.
  • 5 teaspoons jojoba oil or another facial oil of choice (check out The Best Face Oils By Skin Type for some alternatives)
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey: a wonderful antibacterial that helps to gently eliminate breakout-causing bacterial, and also helps calm the skin. This gives the wash its honey color.
  • 1 teaspoon tea tree oil: another great, all-natural antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal that will not only keep acne-causing bacteria in check, but also help preserve the wash.
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil: great for all skin types, it helps calm inflammation and eliminate bacteria.
  • 10 drops rosemary essential oil: another great, all-natural antibacterial.

Note: this is the combination of ingredients that works well for my skin and the combination can be adjusted depending on your skin-type. For example, if you have drier skin, you may need less castile/more water and/or oil. Everybody is different and DIYs can sometimes be a game of trial and error. Luckily, once you have a base such as this one, you can easily add ingredients if necessary!

DIRECTIONS

Add the ingredients in the order listed (if you add the soap before the water, it will become a sudsy explosion!). Stir the mixture gently, mixing everything together. The castile soap and honey will cause the mixture to look cloudy. Put the mixture into your foaming soap dispenser and your facewash is complete!

1 or 2 pumps is all you need as the castile soap is very concentrated. Use once or twice daily (I use it once a day at night).

Discard the contents after a month or if you notice any unfavorable changes. The mixture will separate, so give it a little shake before each use!

Follow with toner and a moisturizer, like Body Unburdened Beauty Blend No.2 for oily and acne-prone skin.

  1. Hi Nadia- I used the exact measurements, exception being adding more water as I have dry skin and 1 tsp of castor oil a sI am prone to fungal infection on face. However, the solution was too strong and i felt uncomfortable in my nose and eyes and the smell was too strong too. i guys sit was tree tea which I was using for the first time. Is it normal? I would also like to mention I used a normal bottle instead of foam dispenser and took a dollar size quantity.

Can you help with my query?

    Thanks!

  2. I don’t think molasses has the same benefits as honey for the skin. Probably best just to use a different recipe.

  3. I think if you could change the honey to molasses. Then the recipe would be to totally animal friendly.

  4. So happy to hear it, Courtney! Halving the recipe is a good idea (and remember to sterilize your jar and tools too!).

  5. I have been using this face wash (with slight modifications listed above) twice daily for almost a month now. I have not had any pimples in all that time, even during my period which I always have some break outs. This facewash has evened my skin tone, by forehead gets red sometimes and this smooths it very well. One warning: after a little less than a month the wash started to smell a little funky so had to throw out almost half. I have made a second batch but halved the recipe so that I won’t have to waste this time. Overall Highly Highly recommend this! Thanks for the base recipe Nadia!

  6. Just made this self. I didn’t have any of the natural honey and Jojoba is just too expensive so I instead used grapeseed and hemp oil as this were good for oily skin.

Just washed and face feels clean with no residue, feeling a little tight (I suspect from the castile soap) so will need a moisturizer.

    Overall great recipe!

  7. Hey Nadia,

Thanks so much for this amazing looking concoction! I am definitely making the switch to natural products soon and I am in awe of how simple it really is! Could you let me know where you got those sponge like rounds which you put the cleanser on? A post on making the transition to natural products would be awesome! Thanks!

  8. Hi, Selidji! You’re very welcome 🙂 I actually do just use my hands or my Clarisonic brush – not sure where I got these little pads, probably from the drugstore.

  9. Hi Nadia!

Thanks for the recipe!! I will try it!!!
Can you please share where you buy the mini sponges that are in the picture. I am assuming you don’t use your hands to wash your face.

    Thanks,

  10. Hi Nadia I am trying to make something gentle to help my teenage daughter’s acne prone skin. Will this stop the itching, which in turn is making her scratch her skin, and making it worse. Do you think this will help?

  11. I have had acne prone skin for years. And I have tried everything. Who knew that making my own facial cleanser would be the answer. I love the way my skin feels now. It is healing. It doesn’t itch or sting anymore. I used the above recipe as a base and then tweaked it for my own skin type and I am beyond pleased with how well my skin is doing. Thank you for posting this recipe.

  12. Hey great recipe! Do I have to remove my makeup first or can I use this to also remove my makeup?

  13. This is an odd question but where did you get the foaming stainless steel pump that is in the picture? I have looked all over for true foaming pumps for my mason jars. I love making my own soaps but sadly have only found plastic. Thanks for your great post!
