Homemade Natural Clarifying Foaming Facewash recipe

This DIY All-Natural Toning & Clarifying Foaming Facewash cleanses and keeps skin clear using just a few simple, natural ingredients! Some — like honey and tea tree oil — are tried-and-true natural remedies for acne and blemishes, making this homemade facewash recipe the perfect addition to your anti-acne and all-natural skincare routine.

Let’s take a closer look…

I made a lot of mistakes in my teens and early twenties…

I ate a lot of heavily-processed “health” food, skipped quite a few classes while nursing hangovers (sorry, Mom and Dad!), and spent a small fortune on harsh, chemical-laden skincare products that only contributed to my breakouts and my body burden. Oh, regrets!

Luckily, now I’m (a little) older and (a lot) wiser.

After struggling with breakouts for years, I finally achieved clear skin after totally overhauling my beauty routine.

(Ok AND my diet — check out my new book all about leveraging nutrition for skin health and to remedy the internal imbalances that trigger common skin issues!)

By simplifying to a few natural and gentle skincare products, I was finally able to get clear skin.

This foaming facial cleanser is an important part of my super-simple all-natural skincare and beauty routine. It includes ingredients that help clarify and tone the skin, as well as ingredients that are extra-gentle and help maintain skin’s natural balance.

DIY Natural Toning and Clarifying Foaming Facewash

DIY All-Natural Toning & Clarifying Foaming Facewash

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup filtered or previously boiled (now room temp) water
  • 1/4 cup liquid castile soap: an all-natural, extremely concentrated soap made from 100% plant oils.
  • 5 teaspoons jojoba oil or another facial oil of choice (check out The Best Face Oils By Skin Type for some alternatives)
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey: a wonderful antibacterial that helps to gently eliminate breakout-causing bacterial, and also helps calm the skin. This gives the wash its honey color.
  • 1 teaspoon tea tree oil: another great, all-natural antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal that will not only keep acne-causing bacteria in check, but also help preserve the wash.
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil: great for all skin types, it helps calm inflammation and eliminate bacteria.
  • 10 drops rosemary essential oil: another great, all-natural antibacterial.

Note: this is the combination of ingredients that works well for my skin and the combination can be adjusted depending on your skin-type. For example, if you have drier skin, you may need less castile/more water and/or oil. Everybody is different and DIYs can sometimes be a game of trial and error. Luckily, once you have a base such as this one, you can easily add ingredients if necessary!

DIRECTIONS

Add the ingredients in the order listed (if you add the soap before the water, it will become a sudsy explosion!). Stir the mixture gently, mixing everything together. The castile soap and honey will cause the mixture to look cloudy. Put the mixture into your foaming soap dispenser and your facewash is complete!

1 or 2 pumps is all you need as the castile soap is very concentrated. Use once or twice daily (I use it once a day at night).

Discard the contents after a month or if you notice any unfavorable changes. The mixture will separate, so give it a little shake before each use!

Follow with toner and a moisturizer, like Body Unburdened Beauty Blend No.2 for oily and acne-prone skin.

  1. hi, i want a good face wash daily please, my skin is combination skin mixte. its good if i do ur face wash. thank you.

  2. Wow sorry for the super belated reply – this somehow completely missed my radar! I mix them 1:1 and don’t add any water. I wet my hands and face before dispensing some in my hands, which helps dilute the soap further (since castile soap is very strong).

  3. Done! But tea tree oil can be applied to the skin neat (undiluted) so it is safe at 1 tablespoon as well – it will just be stronger.

  4. would it be possible for you to update or fix the amount of tea tree oil in the recipe? I keep sharing your recipe thru Pinterest but I’m afraid my friends won’t remember to only do 1 tsp even after I tell them. I’ve been using this about a year now and I almost messed up the last time I made it. It would just be very helpful and appreciated.

  5. Do you apply this face wash with your fingertips or do you recommend using a reusable cotton round?

  6. Hello! I have ordered all the ingredients to make this face wash and can’t wait to give it a try! I know you used a glass jar to keep the face wash in and that essential oils are suppose to be stored in glass, but do you think a plastic foaming dispenser would be safe to use since it’s a small amount of oils that will be in the dispenser? Thanks!

  7. Hey, Amy! I would heat the water slightly and then add the honey. Do this first and shake your jar up or really stir the honey and water together well. That should work!

  8. Hi! I’m new to all of this and very excited to try this face wash. I bought raw honey today and I see that it is pretty solid. Am I supposed to liquefy it somehow before I add it in?

  9. Hey!

    1) If you don’t use a foamer pump, the mixture will be very thin and watery. If you don’t mind that then you don’t need a foamer. But it’s not thick like a regular face wash.

    2) I try to avoid plastic in all areas of my life and encourage others to do the same but ultimately that’s a personal choice.

  10. Hey there, just a few questions:

    1) I know it says you use a foaming dispenser, but does that make a difference? I generally prefer using a regular soap dispenser, and rubbing in the solution into its foaming form. I wanted to know if that would make a difference.

    2) Also, I wanted to know if the container had to be glass, or could it be plastic. Along with the material. I know most websites recommend using Amber glass to protect and preserve the essential oils, but I wanted your opinion on he matter considering this is your formula, and it seems to be working for you. If you could please shoot me an e-mail with he answers it would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

  11. Would love to follow you as I want to try and make cleaning products for home and also natural creams for body.

  12. Hello! I’m not sure since I haven’t tried the recipe with anything else, but I would think that would work just fine!

  13. Hi Nadia,We don’t get liquid Castile soap in here,so can I use anygrated organic soap as a substitute for Castile soap?Anways Nadia I like this recipe for DIY face wash.

  14. can you use something other than the castile soap in this recipe? I think the coconut oil is making me break out???

  15. Thanks for sharing, Nadia! I love hearing about how others modify these recipes for their skin needs. My question is what you use to moisturize after or throughout the day?

  16. Hi, Jasmine! Great question. No, this is not an EO. I personally like a 5% dilution of EO (total), so it depends on how much final product you are making, but I think 4 drops seems a little low.
