Homemade Natural Clarifying Foaming Facewash recipe

This DIY All-Natural Toning & Clarifying Foaming Facewash cleanses and keeps skin clear using just a few simple, natural ingredients! Some — like honey and tea tree oil — are tried-and-true natural remedies for acne and blemishes, making this homemade facewash recipe the perfect addition to your anti-acne and all-natural skincare routine.

Let’s take a closer look…

I made a lot of mistakes in my teens and early twenties…

I ate a lot of heavily-processed “health” food, skipped quite a few classes while nursing hangovers (sorry, Mom and Dad!), and spent a small fortune on harsh, chemical-laden skincare products that only contributed to my breakouts and my body burden. Oh, regrets!

Luckily, now I’m (a little) older and (a lot) wiser.

After struggling with breakouts for years, I finally achieved clear skin after totally overhauling my beauty routine.

(Ok AND my diet — check out my new book all about leveraging nutrition for skin health and to remedy the internal imbalances that trigger common skin issues!)

By simplifying to a few natural and gentle skincare products, I was finally able to get clear skin.

This foaming facial cleanser is an important part of my super-simple all-natural skincare and beauty routine. It includes ingredients that help clarify and tone the skin, as well as ingredients that are extra-gentle and help maintain skin’s natural balance.

DIY Natural Toning and Clarifying Foaming Facewash

DIY All-Natural Toning & Clarifying Foaming Facewash

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup filtered or previously boiled (now room temp) water
  • 1/4 cup liquid castile soap: an all-natural, extremely concentrated soap made from 100% plant oils.
  • 5 teaspoons jojoba oil or another facial oil of choice (check out The Best Face Oils By Skin Type for some alternatives)
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey: a wonderful antibacterial that helps to gently eliminate breakout-causing bacterial, and also helps calm the skin. This gives the wash its honey color.
  • 1 teaspoon tea tree oil: another great, all-natural antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal that will not only keep acne-causing bacteria in check, but also help preserve the wash.
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil: great for all skin types, it helps calm inflammation and eliminate bacteria.
  • 10 drops rosemary essential oil: another great, all-natural antibacterial.

Note: this is the combination of ingredients that works well for my skin and the combination can be adjusted depending on your skin-type. For example, if you have drier skin, you may need less castile/more water and/or oil. Everybody is different and DIYs can sometimes be a game of trial and error. Luckily, once you have a base such as this one, you can easily add ingredients if necessary!

DIRECTIONS

Add the ingredients in the order listed (if you add the soap before the water, it will become a sudsy explosion!). Stir the mixture gently, mixing everything together. The castile soap and honey will cause the mixture to look cloudy. Put the mixture into your foaming soap dispenser and your facewash is complete!

1 or 2 pumps is all you need as the castile soap is very concentrated. Use once or twice daily (I use it once a day at night).

Discard the contents after a month or if you notice any unfavorable changes. The mixture will separate, so give it a little shake before each use!

Follow with toner and a moisturizer, like Body Unburdened Beauty Blend No.2 for oily and acne-prone skin.

  1. Hi Nadia, like you..I also have a little obsession with oils.I use coconut oil +almond oil on my body.
my skin is too dry and itchy..can you suggest me better option?
As I am an Indian, here is variety in seasons and climate..after this face wash i need to apply something to moisturize my skin, what oil should I use whenever my skin feel dry and itchy.
    Thank you 🙂

  2. Great question! I’ve never had any issues with it. And I think it’s there for saponification rather than anything else. According to the Dr. Bronner’s site: “Fair Trade & Organic Coconut Oil reacts with Potassium Hydroxide (for our liquid soaps) or Sodium Hydroxide (for our bar soaps) to create soap. Because it is composed of medium-chain fatty acids, Fair Trade & Organic Coconut Oil gives our soaps lots of bubbles and foam.”

  3. Hey Nadia!
So I’m a little confused because coconut oil is said to cause acne, and in the castile liquid soap coconut oil is listed as one of the ingredients, so wouldn’t this be bad to use in an acne face wash?

  4. Hi Nadia,

I tried making this using Manuka honey instead. The end product smelt really odd. Is it the smell of the honey? Would adding a few drops of lavender essential oil helps?

  5. Well there’s a HUGE difference between “fragrance oils” and essential oils. If they’re fragrance oils, I’d throw them in the trash. If they’re EOs, there’s an endless list of DIYs you can use them with.

  6. My daughter gave me about 6 bottles of green tree & lemon home fragrance oils and I am not sure how to use it. Your help will be appreciated.

  7. You can buy the mason jar tops at Walmart in the canning section. You can buy mason jar tops with pre cut holes for pumps at craft stores. We only have a Michaels near us, which has them, but other craft stores may have them, as well.

  8. Hi. I love, love love this face wash. I am transitioning to chemical free products and this was my first try. I am so glad I lucked out and found this one first. I have been using it for about two months. I usually breakout right before my cycle, but I have not since using this wash! Quick question though…is there a shelf life for this? I have noticed that in the past week my face has been breaking out a little. I am not sure if the wash has lost its effectiveness or my face is just acting weird! By the way, I added only a few drops of Tea Tree Oil because I really do not like the scent. I also just added 3 drops of Geranium oil to the batch I just made. I don’t particularly like that smell either, but the Citrus Blend oil I add covers it up, as well as the Tea Tree Oil smell. I also made two of your DIY mason jar foam dispensers. Love them! Did you know that craft stores like Michael’s have mason jar lids with circles cut out already? They come with normal soap dispensers though, instead of foaming ones. But, the pre cut tops may be worth the purchase! Thanks again!

  9. hi could i use apple cider vinegar instead of the water?! and whats the shelf life of this?! thanks:)

  10. Hi Nadia! Awesome recipe, I’ve just got all the ingredients for the moisturiser and I am just getting all the ingredients for this recipe 🙂 just a question though, could I use raw manuka honey? I would like to try the face mask as well as it can be quite expensive I thought I would ask!

  11. With the simpler facial cleanser that you sometimes use, with the Tea Tree Castile Soap and Manuka Honey, how do you mix those? Do you add any water or any other ingredients and put in a dispenser as you do the DIY clarifying and toning cleanser?

  12. I love his stuff! My face is nice and clean after I use it. I haven’t had any skin issues with it either, which is makes it perfect. Thanks for sharing!
