Are essential oils part of your natural beauty routine yet?

By the end of this guide, they will be!

Essential oils can help keep skin clear, fight the signs of aging, increase skin elasticity, and so much more.

I’ve already blabbed on and on to you about my obsession with face oils and how they have helped me attain and maintain a clear, (as-close-to-)flawless(-as-I’ve-come-since-infancy) complexion. Well consider this part 2…

P.S. I recently took my obsession for face oils and bottled it up! The Body Unburdened Beauty Blends are made with the highest quality organic ingredients… and so much love by yours truly just for you.

First things first, what are essential oils?

Studies ave found that geranium essential oil is anti-inflammatory. Learn which other essential oils are best for skin.

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts.

They capture the plant’s scent and flavor, or “essence,” plus its unique chemical properties.

Because of these unique chemical properties and their benefits, essential oils have long been used in herbal and natural medicine, as well as aromatherapy.

The BIG difference between essential oils and carrier oils you must know

If you want to learn about essential oils, you’ll also need to learn about carrier oils. This is especially true if you plan to use essential oils for skin application and health!

There is a big difference between the two, though they’re most typically used hand-in-hand, blended together.

Carrier oils are vegetable oils that are derived from the fatty portion of plants, usually from the seeds, kernels or the nuts.

Examples of carrier oils: coconut oil, jojoba oil, argan oil, sunflower seed oil, rosehip seed oil, evening primrose oil, and many more.

Can essential oils be used on skin?

The answer: yes and no.

Only some essential oils are safe to use on your skin, and even those essential oils must be properly diluted in a carrier oil. You can also dilute them in butters (like shea, cocoa, or mango) or aloe vera.

Remember: essential oils are very concentrated herbal extracts and very strong!

So if applied undiluted, essential oils can cause skin irritation and burning, which we of course don’t want.

How to use essential oils on your skin: 3 must-know rules

Rule #1: Essential oils should’t be applied to the skin “neat” or undiluted

They should always be diluted in a carrier oil like argan oil, jojoba oil, pumpkin seed oil, grapeseed oil, etc.

You can find the best carrier option for your skin type here: The Best Face Oils By Skin Type

Opinions on proper dilution ratios vary, though most recommendations are between 1% and 2% of the final product.

Since there are 20 drops in 1 ml and 29 mL in 1 oz, for every 1 oz of carrier oil:

  • 2% dillution = no more than 12 drops of essential oils
  • 1% dillution = no more than 6 drops of essential oils

Rule #2: Be sure to do a patch test

This is to make sure your skin does not have an adverse reaction to the essential oils.

The inner forearm is a great place to do a test since the skin is delicate, similar to facial skin.

Rule #3: Some essential oils cause photosensitivity and so should not be used on the skin

In other words, these essential oils make your skin more vulnerable to UV rays. This in turn makes skin more vulnerable to uncomfortable sunburn as well as premature aging.

Essential oils that are known to cause photosensitivity:

  • Angelica root Angelica archangelica
  • Bergamot peel Citrus aurantium
  • Bitter orange peel Citrus sinensis
  • Cumin seed Cuminum cyminum
  • Grapefruit peel Citrus paradisi
  • Lemon peel Citrus limonum
  • Lime peel Citrus aurantifolia
  • Mandarin leaf Citrus reticulata
  • Rue leaf Ruta graveolens

You may see varying safe dilution amounts for these essential oils. But my thought process is is: why take the risk when there are SO many other essential oils with wonderful skin benefits and no risk of photosensitivity? It’s just not worth it.

  1. What oils do u recommend for redness of face, I am past the acne stages and now concerned with wrinkles and fine lines and my under eye area is red with small I spider veins

  2. Yes! I’m in the process of updating it with rose instead of lemon (not sure if you saw my update within the post) – it will be back up by this evening!

  3. Could you please add the chart back of the uses of the top 10 oils? I referenced it often and miss it. Thanks 🙂

  4. Hi.
Love your ideas and suggestions, I’m going to try some of your beauty recopies. I do have question, my husband has psoriasis and I’m giving Hemp oil a try, and I wanted to mix it with the patchouli oil but he doesn’t like the smell. Is there another essential oil that work for this purpose? Please advise.
Thank you for this great website I’m learning a lot.

  5. Great thank you! So the 5% needs to be across the board as a rule.
If I have 20 ml of carrier then I would need to have just 20 drops total of essential oils. Not one drop of each per 1 ml carrier. Thank you again!!

  6. Yes, you can mix multiple EOs just follow the rules/precautions at the bottom of the post. And as long as you avoid contact WITH the eye and don’t have a sensitivity to any of the oils, you should be OK to apply it around the eye area.

  7. Do you mix multiple essential oils with your carrier oil? I have been using coconut oil for about 5 months now whipped with rose oil, but hasn’t helped my wrinkles under eyes. Was wAnting to try jojoba with some carrot, lavender, and geranium along with some vitamin e as mixture. Do you know if mixing and applying to skin would be ok and to the eye area? Am 44 years old with skin on dryer side and redness due to broken capillaries on cheeks as well and some brown aging spots forming. Thanks!!!

  8. Hi, I heard mixing castor oil, glycerine, olive oil, coconut oil and magnolia oil can improve the scarring on my legs. Is it safe to mix these oils?

  9. i too adore oil on my face! I cleanse with grapeseed, castor and frankincense. I have had amazing results. I would love to know how you use the rosehip oil and hemp seed oil? You mentioned as a moisturizer? I just cleanse with my mix and I don’t have to moisturize, so wondering if I would just add to my mix?

  10. I was just thinking of the commercial….I have an app for that now I say I have an oil for that lol.
Initially I replaced my store bought cosmetics with so. Now I am using them for my fibromyalgia pain.

  11. Hi..Can I mix oregano, tea tree, lavendar and jojoba oil for daily skincare and if so how of much of each..i am new at this:)

  12. No, you dilute the EOs with a carrier oil – they are too potent to use on their own.

  13. I’m very interested in playing w/these essential oils. When you say you need to dilute w/EO what does that mean?

  14. Hello! I really enjoy your blog!
In your research, have you found that lemongrass EO is okay to substitute for lemon EO? From what I have read, they appear to have very similar properties. I am looking to create my own facial oil blend for acne. I already have the lemongrass, but looking to see if I needed to invest in the lemon as well. Thanks!

  15. I mix a drop each of carrot seed oil, rosehip,Frankinscence, meadow seed. I applied this to my skin for a week once a day, it caused pimples on my skin. My purpose to buy these oils was to use it as a substitute of anti-aging cream and lightening the pigmentation on my cheek. Can you let me know if these oils can be mixed and used or is there any other way to use them which can give results?

  16. Hi, I want to make a facial oil blend and want to know if i need to add vitamin e to it as a preservative and if so how much. Also i have read that wheatgerm acts as a preservative and would this be better than the natural vitamin e. many thanks maria
