DIY All-Natural Toning & Clarifying Foaming Facewash
DIY Skincare & Beauty Essential oils Natural Beauty
This DIY All-Natural Toning & Clarifying Foaming Facewash cleanses and keeps skin clear using just a few simple, natural ingredients! Some — like honey and tea tree oil — are tried-and-true natural remedies for acne and blemishes, making this homemade facewash recipe the perfect addition to your anti-acne and all-natural skincare routine.
Let’s take a closer look…
I made a lot of mistakes in my teens and early twenties…
I ate a lot of heavily-processed “health” food, skipped quite a few classes while nursing hangovers (sorry, Mom and Dad!), and spent a small fortune on harsh, chemical-laden skincare products that only contributed to my breakouts and my body burden. Oh, regrets!
Luckily, now I’m (a little) older and (a lot) wiser.
After struggling with breakouts for years, I finally achieved clear skin after totally overhauling my beauty routine.
(Ok AND my diet — check out my new book all about leveraging nutrition for skin health and to remedy the internal imbalances that trigger common skin issues!)
By simplifying to a few natural and gentle skincare products, I was finally able to get clear skin.
This foaming facial cleanser is an important part of my super-simple all-natural skincare and beauty routine. It includes ingredients that help clarify and tone the skin, as well as ingredients that are extra-gentle and help maintain skin’s natural balance.
DIY All-Natural Toning & Clarifying Foaming Facewash
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup filtered or previously boiled (now room temp) water
- 1/4 cup liquid castile soap: an all-natural, extremely concentrated soap made from 100% plant oils.
- 5 teaspoons jojoba oil or another facial oil of choice (check out The Best Face Oils By Skin Type for some alternatives)
- 2 tablespoons raw honey: a wonderful antibacterial that helps to gently eliminate breakout-causing bacterial, and also helps calm the skin. This gives the wash its honey color.
- 1 teaspoon tea tree oil: another great, all-natural antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal that will not only keep acne-causing bacteria in check, but also help preserve the wash.
- 15 drops lavender essential oil: great for all skin types, it helps calm inflammation and eliminate bacteria.
- 10 drops rosemary essential oil: another great, all-natural antibacterial.
Note: this is the combination of ingredients that works well for my skin and the combination can be adjusted depending on your skin-type. For example, if you have drier skin, you may need less castile/more water and/or oil. Everybody is different and DIYs can sometimes be a game of trial and error. Luckily, once you have a base such as this one, you can easily add ingredients if necessary!
DIRECTIONS
Add the ingredients in the order listed (if you add the soap before the water, it will become a sudsy explosion!). Stir the mixture gently, mixing everything together. The castile soap and honey will cause the mixture to look cloudy. Put the mixture into your foaming soap dispenser and your facewash is complete!
1 or 2 pumps is all you need as the castile soap is very concentrated. Use once or twice daily (I use it once a day at night).
Discard the contents after a month or if you notice any unfavorable changes. The mixture will separate, so give it a little shake before each use!
Follow with toner and a moisturizer, like Body Unburdened Beauty Blend No.2 for oily and acne-prone skin.

Hello Nadia!
I’m new to all of this and very excited to try this face wash. I bought all the ingredients, but regarding the raw honey, I bought Raw Manuka Honey instead. Do you think it still ok? Looking forward to hearing from you…
Do you remember where the foam soap dispenser pump that you used in the above pictures came from?
I saw your directions, but I was interested in the pump you used. Its very wide and very nice.
Thanks
Nadia, I have been following your skin care advice for about 7 months. Making my own face wash, toner and moisturizer using your recipes and then detoxing the rest of my beauty regimine, including hair care, after seeing such good results on my face. Well, after 7 months I finally have become “that girl who only gets zits during her period”. Although I have a long way to go to rid my skin of acne scarring, I must thank you for the work you do. I received a compliment I have never received the other day when my sister, who hasn’t seen me in months, told me my skin looks matted as if I had make up on. Nadia, this compliment came on a day we were moving furniture and cleaning on a sweltering July day in Florida! Normally I would be a greasy, shiny lightbulb!
You have been a wonderful guide. Thank you!
If you do any substitutions, I would do 1:1.
Hope you’ve been enjoying it, Carolyn!
I just made your face wash using 3 TBSP coconut oil and 2 TBSP Argon oil. Super easy to make. We shall see what the results are over time.
So things happens for a reason, thank goodness. I had two lists of your top ten oils, in which the second one was undiluted. Using my cell phone to order I accidentally ordered my first list. Good thing, been doing a lot of reading today and found out that undiluted is not recommended for the skin. I’m still hoping to receive advice on my prior post. Thanks, Sheri
So I bought everything on this list for your Clarifying & Toning Foaming Face Wash, I also purchased the oils on your Top Ten Essential Oils for Skincare (all undiluted). I am 52 years old and noticing a huge change in my skin. Can I substitute the jojoba, tea tree and the rosemary oils with everything on your top ten list except of course the tea tree oil? If so, how much of each? Thanks,Sheri
Hi, Gillian! You can really do any scent you’d like – I typically choose unscented, lavender, or tea tree but eucalyptus sounds great too since it naturally helps right bacteria!
Hi Nadia!
I’m just wondering what scent of castile soap to use. Do I get the scent free? or can I use a scent such as eucalyptus ?
Thanks!
I’ve seen that preservatives should be used when using ingredients such as honey, and essential oils shelf life is lessened by oxidation? How long would you suggest keeping this face wash? Under what conditions?
Hi Nadia. Thank you for moderating comments. I know that’s a lot of work. I see from the other comments your answer regarding Teatree oil versus essentialoil, but all I have is EO. How many drops would you use with your current measurements noted above? Thank you.
I noticed the picture of this post has a mini sponge on it. Do you use this sponge to wash your face when using this foaming wash?
If so, what is it called so I can search for and buy it.
Thank you.
What would you recommend to substitute for lemon oil? I have great results for my oily skin, but summer is coming and I thought I should add something instead of the lemon. Thank you!
I made this for my 13 yr old step-daughter, and it made her face worse…her face got red and started to break out more. What can I do to neutralize her skin??
Thank you..
Yes, I really love these silicone squeeze tubes and I also use smaller glass jars and tins for other items for travel.
I just use this very simple, moisturizing shea butter soap. But I have been planning to make a body wash soon!
Oo, also… What do you do for body soap? Do you have a DIY recipe for that?
What do you do for travel? Do you have all your regimens in travel-sized, too?
Hi, Chrissy. I use and really enjoy Mountain Rose Herbs – most of their essential oils are certified organic.
