Homemade Natural Clarifying Foaming Facewash recipe

This DIY All-Natural Toning & Clarifying Foaming Facewash cleanses and keeps skin clear using just a few simple, natural ingredients! Some — like honey and tea tree oil — are tried-and-true natural remedies for acne and blemishes, making this homemade facewash recipe the perfect addition to your anti-acne and all-natural skincare routine.

Let’s take a closer look…

I made a lot of mistakes in my teens and early twenties…

I ate a lot of heavily-processed “health” food, skipped quite a few classes while nursing hangovers (sorry, Mom and Dad!), and spent a small fortune on harsh, chemical-laden skincare products that only contributed to my breakouts and my body burden. Oh, regrets!

Luckily, now I’m (a little) older and (a lot) wiser.

After struggling with breakouts for years, I finally achieved clear skin after totally overhauling my beauty routine.

(Ok AND my diet — check out my new book all about leveraging nutrition for skin health and to remedy the internal imbalances that trigger common skin issues!)

By simplifying to a few natural and gentle skincare products, I was finally able to get clear skin.

This foaming facial cleanser is an important part of my super-simple all-natural skincare and beauty routine. It includes ingredients that help clarify and tone the skin, as well as ingredients that are extra-gentle and help maintain skin’s natural balance.

DIY All-Natural Toning & Clarifying Foaming Facewash

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup filtered or previously boiled (now room temp) water
  • 1/4 cup liquid castile soap: an all-natural, extremely concentrated soap made from 100% plant oils.
  • 5 teaspoons jojoba oil or another facial oil of choice (check out The Best Face Oils By Skin Type for some alternatives)
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey: a wonderful antibacterial that helps to gently eliminate breakout-causing bacterial, and also helps calm the skin. This gives the wash its honey color.
  • 1 teaspoon tea tree oil: another great, all-natural antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal that will not only keep acne-causing bacteria in check, but also help preserve the wash.
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil: great for all skin types, it helps calm inflammation and eliminate bacteria.
  • 10 drops rosemary essential oil: another great, all-natural antibacterial.

Note: this is the combination of ingredients that works well for my skin and the combination can be adjusted depending on your skin-type. For example, if you have drier skin, you may need less castile/more water and/or oil. Everybody is different and DIYs can sometimes be a game of trial and error. Luckily, once you have a base such as this one, you can easily add ingredients if necessary!

DIRECTIONS

Add the ingredients in the order listed (if you add the soap before the water, it will become a sudsy explosion!). Stir the mixture gently, mixing everything together. The castile soap and honey will cause the mixture to look cloudy. Put the mixture into your foaming soap dispenser and your facewash is complete!

1 or 2 pumps is all you need as the castile soap is very concentrated. Use once or twice daily (I use it once a day at night).

Discard the contents after a month or if you notice any unfavorable changes. The mixture will separate, so give it a little shake before each use!

Follow with toner and a moisturizer, like Body Unburdened Beauty Blend No.2 for oily and acne-prone skin.

  1. I was quite excited to try this and bought all the ingredients, added them one after the other as listed on the article, poured into the dispenser… and the result is just pure liquid. Not even foaming at all. Is my dispenser wrong? Did I miss a step? I am so confused, and now have one to one liter of the mix that I can’t even use 🙁

  2. I just discovered your blog about 15 minutes ago and cannot WAIT to try some of these beautiful recipes for my own skin. Thank you for such simple and helpful information, Nadia!

  3. Yes, good question – my face does best when I don’t wash it at all in the mornings! Washing it in the mornings dried it out and irritated it. I was worried at first because I used to think the key to clear skin was to keep it as clean and oil-free as possible, but I know better now!

  4. In a previous comment you said that you only wash your face with this at night. I was just curious what you do in the mornings?

  5. Thank you for this recipe! I loved the first batch but made some changes because it was a little drying for my skin. I added half the amount of Castile Soap, so only 2 TBSP. I added the recommended 5 Tsp of Jajoba oil plus 2 Tsp of Rosehip oil. It’s so nourishing!

  6. Would the addition of A natural preservative help this last longer than a month? Something like vitamin e or grapefruit seed oil, which are both for skin on their own?

  7. Is there a single go to brand for good quality therapeutic oils that you recommend. Have you ever used/purchase from Edens Garden? I would like to try to find a brand that is consistent across the board.

  8. I mean everyone’s skin is different so it can’t be guaranteed. And I’ve never personally used it on my body.

I only asked about nutrition/allergies since a long-standing skin issue like that is typically a symptom of something internal.

  9. yes, but I have resolved those issues….I read that the goats milk soap could be driving for some, I was wondering if your face wash is effective on your body as well

  10. Have you looked into a possible nutritional deficiency or allergy that could be causing this?

  11. I am in my 40’s and have been suffering from mild to moderate acne on back, shoulders and chest. I have used proactiv for over 10 years with moderate success but not great. I am tired of all the chemicals, etc and just think there should be a better way. I read an article about goat milk soap with tea tree oil and I have tried that for 2 weeks but instantly it made me itchy and is driving me crazy, no matter how much i moisturize. What is your recommendation for a body wash for mild to moderate acne and moisturizers? I wondered about your DIY everyday face moisturizer for my body—by the way, the soap with tea tree seems to be working well except for the insane itching. Also, I have fair skin.

  12. Oh no! Were you using an acne wash before? Maybe the castile soap in this recipe is too harsh/drying for your skin. But I wouldn’t give up on finding a natural solution that works for you and your skin needs.

  13. Anyone have any experience with their face becoming problematic after stopping chemical face wash use? My face was always fine. I stopped with store bought stuff to get away from it… I’m almost three weeks in and my skin is the worst it has ever been. 🙁

  14. Hi Nadia, I have been using his recipe for about six months with AWESOME results. I use both the cleanser here and then your oil moisturizer recipe. Over the past month and a half or so, however, my breakouts are back like before I ever used essential oils, etc. Do you think my skin got used to the formula? Should I switch it up?? HELP!!

  15. Followed exactly, used less tea tea as I read in remarks the receipe was off on that. Washed in am and use jojoba oil as moisturizer with my regular lotion with SPF. Amazing results. Took about 2 weeks, but just remarkable! I use tea tree oil as spot treatment as needed. My acne is truly under control and healing! I still get an occasional zit here and there but the wash and tea tree attack it before it becomes a blemish. Thank you so much for this site! I’m in my 30s, 3 kids with combo skin. Been fighting breakouts forever it seems. So so glad I gave this a real try!

  16. I have never used essential oils before, but I am interested in trying them. I really like the idea of this face wash and then using an essential oil as a moisturizer as you mentioned in another post. I am worried though that this is going to make my face break out worse. I currently only wash my face in the shower with my regular body wash because when I was using other face washes (even ones for sensitive skin) it wasn’t doing anything to clear my skin and they were drying out my face. Basically, because I am new to essential oils, I don’t want to spend a ton of money on something that is not going to work for me. Are there any substitutes I can use for some of these so that I only need to purchase one to start with? I was thinking about buying castile soap with tea tree oil in it and then buying jojoba essential oil and leaving out the lemon essential oil. Do you think that would work? Thank you!
