Homemade Natural Clarifying Foaming Facewash recipe

This DIY All-Natural Toning & Clarifying Foaming Facewash cleanses and keeps skin clear using just a few simple, natural ingredients! Some — like honey and tea tree oil — are tried-and-true natural remedies for acne and blemishes, making this homemade facewash recipe the perfect addition to your anti-acne and all-natural skincare routine.

Let’s take a closer look…

I made a lot of mistakes in my teens and early twenties…

I ate a lot of heavily-processed “health” food, skipped quite a few classes while nursing hangovers (sorry, Mom and Dad!), and spent a small fortune on harsh, chemical-laden skincare products that only contributed to my breakouts and my body burden. Oh, regrets!

Luckily, now I’m (a little) older and (a lot) wiser.

After struggling with breakouts for years, I finally achieved clear skin after totally overhauling my beauty routine.

(Ok AND my diet — check out my new book all about leveraging nutrition for skin health and to remedy the internal imbalances that trigger common skin issues!)

By simplifying to a few natural and gentle skincare products, I was finally able to get clear skin.

This foaming facial cleanser is an important part of my super-simple all-natural skincare and beauty routine. It includes ingredients that help clarify and tone the skin, as well as ingredients that are extra-gentle and help maintain skin’s natural balance.

DIY Natural Toning and Clarifying Foaming Facewash

DIY All-Natural Toning & Clarifying Foaming Facewash

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup filtered or previously boiled (now room temp) water
  • 1/4 cup liquid castile soap: an all-natural, extremely concentrated soap made from 100% plant oils.
  • 5 teaspoons jojoba oil or another facial oil of choice (check out The Best Face Oils By Skin Type for some alternatives)
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey: a wonderful antibacterial that helps to gently eliminate breakout-causing bacterial, and also helps calm the skin. This gives the wash its honey color.
  • 1 teaspoon tea tree oil: another great, all-natural antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal that will not only keep acne-causing bacteria in check, but also help preserve the wash.
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil: great for all skin types, it helps calm inflammation and eliminate bacteria.
  • 10 drops rosemary essential oil: another great, all-natural antibacterial.

Note: this is the combination of ingredients that works well for my skin and the combination can be adjusted depending on your skin-type. For example, if you have drier skin, you may need less castile/more water and/or oil. Everybody is different and DIYs can sometimes be a game of trial and error. Luckily, once you have a base such as this one, you can easily add ingredients if necessary!

DIRECTIONS

Add the ingredients in the order listed (if you add the soap before the water, it will become a sudsy explosion!). Stir the mixture gently, mixing everything together. The castile soap and honey will cause the mixture to look cloudy. Put the mixture into your foaming soap dispenser and your facewash is complete!

1 or 2 pumps is all you need as the castile soap is very concentrated. Use once or twice daily (I use it once a day at night).

Discard the contents after a month or if you notice any unfavorable changes. The mixture will separate, so give it a little shake before each use!

Follow with toner and a moisturizer, like Body Unburdened Beauty Blend No.2 for oily and acne-prone skin.

  1. Hi, Kelli! Yes, it does seem like a very expensive wash at first glance but you’re just using a very little bit of each ingredients for each batch. You can use the ingredients in a ton of other natural DIYs or individually.

I suggest discarding any unused wash after a month since it does not include any heavy preservatives.

  2. I stumbled upon your website and really want to give this a try! However, the supplies that you linked to add up to about $70 D:
How long will this last? Hopefully a long time!

  3. Hi! Nadia
Can we replace Jojoba oil & Tea Tree oil with their essential oils? If yes then what ratio you suggest. Instead of 5 teaspoon, 5 drops will be ok? Or it may be too much for an essential oil!

  4. Just wondering if it is ok that I mixed it after reading the tea tree oil amount. Will it be ok yo use with a tablespoon of tea tree instead of teaspoon?

  5. I’m a 68 year old lady, who has a acne problems all my life. This foaming cleanser is the only one that has cleared my skin up. I wish I could have had this years ago. I have had blemishes dry up and disappear, that have been there for years. I’ve spent fortunes on products, just one product would cost more than all of these! I adjusted the oil amount to 3 teaspoons, because of my oily skin. Just wanted to thank you.

  6. Ive been using the Somaluxe Face Wash (with organic ingredients) everyday. Works amazing, makes skin clear after the first use. It smells so fresh and makes your skin feel like it just left the spa. The ingredients are not harsh nor do they test on animals. Which is a big plus. It keeps pores perfect and makes my skin even.

  7. I am looking around online for the foaming hand pump. I found some but they all say “recommended for hand washing only”. Do I really need to find a foaming pump that is recommended for face washing?

  8. Will this wash work well by itself to clear up breakouts and acne? Or are other steps necessary throughout the day or before or after you use the wash?

  9. This recipe looks amazing. However, I live in sunny California and I’m worried that the lemon EO might cause sun sensitivity. Can you recommend an EO to use in it’s place? Or is the lemon not really an issue because of how diluted it will be?

Also, I was wondering if this recipe can be made without the water. I realize that it wouldn’t be foamy, but I thought perhaps it would last without the water…..what do you think?

  10. I have been using this face wash for quite some time now and I LOVE IT! it is honeslty the best recipe I have ever found for home made face wash. CHEAP, easy, natural and stays good for weeks!! Great post 🙂

  11. Do you know of any alternatives to honey for skincare? I am allergic and super bummed I can’t take advantage of its awesome skin care qualities. Any alternatives that you know of? I have normal skin that is prone to breakouts and clogged pores. I’ve tried oil cleansing (not for very long) and just couldn’t get fully into it.

  12. Hi Devin, I am using the same soap. I just do not add the extra tea tree oil in the mixture. I have been using for about 2 months. I love this facewash. I have seen a noticeable difference in my face.

  13. Can the 18-in-1 hemp tea tree pure-Castile liquid soap be used? If so, do you just not add the extra tea tree oil?
    Jenny-did you try that?

  14. Paige, I’m sure you’ll be fine without the Lemon EO. The Tea tree is a great antifungal already. To be safe (and as with all homemade products) just make sure to check occasionally that it hasn’t gone bad (smell is a great indicator 🙂 ! ). I plan to make this tonight! Also, sanitizing your jar and pump prior to adding the wash should cut down on any growth as well.

I believe the tea tree oil linked to is an essential oil, so I’ll use the tea tree EO I already have. Thanks for the recipe Nadia! I may use my lavender Dr Bronner’s. Love the smell!

  15. I managed to gather all the ingredients, but there’s no where in my town that sells lemon essential oil. I would like to go ahead and make the wash now so is it possible to make it without the essential oil and it be effective?
