Looking for the best natural mascara and daunted by all the different options?

Well I’ve done all the footwork for you — I put 8 popular natural mascaras to the test. Which one came out on top? Let’s take a look…

I don’t always wear makeup… but when I do, it’s mascara.

best natural mascara

With one swipe of a little wand, I suddenly look more awake, brighter, and ready to take on the world.

(It’s a magical little wand.)

Why is it important to switch to natural mascara?

Like most conventional cosmetic products, most mascaras on the market unfortunately contain some unhealthy chemicals like:

  • Parabens: endocrine disruptors that have been linked to cancer
  • Aluminum: a neurotoxin that is considered to be far worse than mercury — yikes!
  • Propylene glycol: can cause extreme irritation for some individuals
  • BHA and BHT: endocrine disruptors that have been linked to cancer

Remember: endocrine disruptors interfere with your body’s hormones, the chemical messengers that tell the body what to do and how to do it. Yes, they’re a big deal, which is why we don’t want anything interfering with them!

But finding a great natural mascara is no easy feat!

There are a ton of options out there and not all of them perform the way you want or are accustomed to if you’re transitioning from a conventional mascara.

In fact, one of the most common questions I get from readers is, “What mascara do you use?”

If you’ve read about my super-simple all-natural skincare and beauty routine, then you know the answer…

But few things thrill me like trying a new non-toxic beauty product. (What can I say? I fit the “girl” stereotype to a tee sometimes.)

I was also curious if the mascara I was using and recommending to readers really was still the best natural mascara in 2019. After all, I’d been using it for over 5 years and a lot of new options have popped up on the market since then!

So I went on a little hunt… a hunt for the best natural mascara.

I tested 8 different natural mascaras and wore them each for at least two full days.

Some were duds while others were UHMAZING! And I am happy to say that my longtime, tried-and-true favorite held it’s ground 🙂

P.S. I think all of these mascaras (really all mascaras, ever!) work best when applied after curling your lashes.

100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Mascarathe best natural mascara | 100% Pure

Verdict: LOVE 💕

My tried-and-true favorite for years now, this mascara gives perfect length and lots of volume. Stays put all day without any flaking, and washes off quite easily.

Beautycounter Volumizing Mascara

Verdict: LOVE 💕

Want big volume? Here you go! Provides great volume with one swipe but builds easily for extra drama. Also provides length and has great staying power.

Lili Lolo Black Vegan Mascarathe best natural mascara | Lily Lolo

Verdict: LOVE 💕

Another all-around fantastic option. Gives awesome volume, length, and definition without looking clumpy or smudging. Also really buildable if you’re looking for a more dramatic look.

W3LL PEOPLE Expressionist Mascarathe best natural mascara | W3ll People

Verdict: LOVE 💕

Doesn’t give as much volume as the 100% Pure mascara, but gives beautiful length and definition. The brush is not one I typically like — it’s fat with short little bristles. In the past, this type of brush caused clumps but that didn’t happen with this one.

Zuzu Luxe Mascarathe best natural mascara | Zuzu Luxe

Verdict: LOVE! 💕

With a well-defined brush that gives just the perfect amount of mascara, this one is lengthening and defining. I rolled the wand at the base of my lashes for more volume, and it layered well.

Gabriel Cosmetics  Natural Mascarathe best natural mascara | Gabriel Color

Verdict: Not bad

I liked the brush — the bristles are well-defined and it applied evenly. It gives good length and volume but it did flake under my eyes a little throughout the day.

Juice Beauty PHYTO-PIGMENTS Ultra-Natural Mascarathe best natural mascara | Juice Beauty

Verdict:  Nope

The brush is twisted and the bristles are not defined, which gives a heavy, clumpy application. When I tried combing my lashes to fix it, the mascara already started to dry and so I was left with obvious flakes, which fell under my eyes over the day.

Honeybee Gardens Truly Natural Mascarathe best natural mascara | Honeybee Gardens

Verdict: Nope

I REALLY wanted to love this mascara — it’s the cheapest! But honestly it didn’t even look like I was wearing mascara no matter how much I tried to layer it (and it smells a little like beer!).

Have you tried any of these or other natural mascaras?

  1. I have used mirenessa: secret weapon mascara with beeswax. Last all day, waterproof, but still essy to remove wirh only warm water.
But actually I have tried a homemade mascara the last couple of days (on som sites called eggscara): egg yalk and active charcoal. So far works just fine 🙂

  2. Again Arbonne non toxic hypo allergenic. Also contains no formaldehyde. My lashes are so healthy since using. Removes easily!

  3. My favorite used to be Alima Pure. I just recently tried Elate Clean Cosmetics and am in love. It’s the best mascara ever! Tops 100% Pure in my book!

  4. My goal was to never sell makeup when I became a consultant for Lemongrass Spa Products. However I received the mascara in one of my kits and fell in love!! I previously used tarte which I still love… but i am absolutely hooked on our mascara! I would love for you to try it and tell me your thoughts. It smells great, removes easily, doesn’t smudge. And it’s all natural 😉

  5. I also love Arbonne’s It’s a Long Story Mascara. It conditions my lashes and builds easily so I can apply two coats with no clumping, plus it lengthens beautifully. It’s botanically based, vegan, and gluten free and has no harsh chemicals!

  6. I’ve used the W3LL People Expressionist Mascara and loved it! Great Length, and went on smooth. Un-fortunately, it ‘melted’ off my lashes to under my eyes w/n 3-4 hours. I use the oil cleanse method and moisturize w/ oil so I don’t know if this is part of the problem or not.

  7. Huh I did not have that problem? Was it hot out? I’ve only ever used it in winter so I hope that’s not the case… :/

  8. I’ve been using Arbonne’s It’s a Long Story Mascara for two years now…I am an Arbonne Independent Consultant. I love how our mascara is botanically based and is free of harsh chemicals. After one year of using the mascara, I was shocked at how much my lashes grew longer…and I’m 55 yrs old!!! The mascara washes off easy and conditions great.

  9. I’ve shared one of your recipes on my blog and my followers have absolutely loved it! I gave you credit in the post!

My favorite is definitely 100% Pure but my next favorite (since I use a few different mascaras at a time) is Hynt Beauty!

  10. I use W3ll People Expressionist Bio-Extreme Mascara and I LOVE IT!. I like the company, what they stand for and the ingredients they use or more importantly, what they don’t use.
One coat is great for a great all natural look but add two or three coats if you want to glam it up! Brush is wonderful and you never get clumps!

  11. I read your article about mascara, and was skeptical. I’ve used waterproof mascara for 30 years, as it is the only kind that does not rub off on my skin. I ordered the 100% Pure mascara in Dark Chocolate and am amazed at how well it stays put. No smudges, no smears all day! AND, it smells like chocolate…what could be better? I’m sold on this product, worth every penny!

  12. You should try Root!!! Their products are made in my hometown and they are all beyond fabulous!!!!!!! Let ’em know I sent ya! Organic, gluten free and their mascara is beyond amazing!!!!
From the website: Root 100% Lash Mascara is 100% Natural with Organic lash conditioning ingredients. Our 100% Lash Mascara coats & thickens each lash while being smudge proof & water resistant. Plus, our no clumping or flaking formula contains no artificial colors, preservatives or fragrances making it ideal for sensitive eyes. Our compact tube contains just as much product as our competitors but in a smaller container to keep it from drying out. The short wand allows you precise control when applying so you don’t miss a lash! …and yes, that is your mascara that smells like a vanilla cupcake!

  13. I use Jamaica black castor oil as a mascara. It’s thick enough and I reuse an old washed mascara bride my mom had laying around. It keeps my lashes thick 😀

  14. Younique has the most amazing all natural makeup. In particular is their mascara. I have tried so many others, and nothing compares to the length and volume I get with this product.

  15. I am not one to wear make up with the exception of very special occasions, such as weddings, also I suffer from Fibromyalgia and Chemical Sensitivities, so I am very cautious about the products I buy and use.
There is an Australian Brand of Mascara that is to die for, it is called Eye of Horus and it is the only mascara I will use. I discovered it soon after it came out, thanks to one of my eldest daughters school friends and it has become a favourite with my daughters too. It is available online and is worth a look.

  16. I LOVE everything W3ll People. Plus I’m lucky enough to live a couple of blocks from the store which is so charming and smells amazing!

They also have their mascara in awesome shades of blue, purple and brown now.

  17. Oof just looked at the ingredients – talc and parabens! You may want to pick a safer option once your tube is out. I always wonder why so many people believe Lush is totally 100% natural…

  18. Can you please suggest an eye cream, serum or an oil to help with fine lines, dark circles and bags. I have been trying some expensive eye creams but only wind up with redness, puffiness, and burning. I am prone to Mumia and clogged pores and just know what to do.

  20. Have you tried the new BeautyCounter mascara? If so how did it compare? Just curious?

  21. Have you tried Arbonne mascara? It is amazing – 100% goodness! Not only does it smell wonderful (like violets) but after using for a while, one’s eyelashes are longer!

  22. I’m looking for a natural, organic mascara that is great for SENSITIVE EYES. My mother had brain surgery 2 years ago and her facial nerve was severed, causing her to have multitudes of issues with her left eye. Poor thing can’t even wear makeup anymore because of how sensitive they are to the harsh chemicals in traditional makeup. It really hurts her self-esteem as a women because hey, makeup is kinda a big deal for us regardless if we wear a ton or a little. ANY SUGGESTIONS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

  23. Is W3ll People Expressionist Bio-Extreme Mascara the same as W3ll People Expressionist Mascara? I used the ladder and it smudges under my eye after 4 hours 🙁

  24. I’ve used 100%pure. The smell was the best part, imo. I love Beautycounter volumizing mascara and that when I buy I’m supporting a larger mission. I also like that it’s EWG verified.

  25. Yes, I LOVE Beautycounter’s mascara too! I actually need to update the post with the Volumizing and Lenghtening mascaras… can you see they’re pictured!? 😉

  26. I’m always on the look for a good natural mascara! Thanks for these reviews, I have never heard of any of these brands, so it’s good to get some opinions on them!

  27. cURIOUS WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS ARE ON RED APPLE LIPSTICK’S MASCARA’S. I READ MANY REVIEWS ON THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT AND THE LACK OF ALLERGENS IN COMMON MASCARAS SUCH AS GLUTEN. ALSO THEY MENTION THAT THEY DON’T INCLUDE THESE IN THEIR FORMULA: polybutene, paraben, dimethicone, petrolatum and petroleum distillates, propylene glycol, Triethanolamine (TEA), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Ethyl acetate, Diazolidinyl, and others cause your body to go on overload and clog your follicles and lash roots.

  28. I was looking at your Master List for makeup (I’m trying to slowly convert all of my toxic, non-natural makeup to the good stuff as I run out!) and you had the beautycounter Volumizing Mascara listed. Do you like this better than those you listed above?

  29. Ashley! Thank you for asking this – I’ve been meaning to update this post with the Beautycounter mascaras! (Ironically, they’re pictured but I forgot to include info in the post) I think it’s comparable to the 100% Pure mascara in terms of look but with more staying power.

  30. Always liked Dr Hauschka or Ecco Bella. Wore the navy-like colors (haven’t worn makeup in years so not sure if they still come in the blues). I like the type that dry after applying and wash off easily with soap and water.
my eyes get irritated very easily and neither of these brands seemed to bother my eyes, ever. EccoBella’s eyeshadow stays on well with no primer, btw

  31. Does the 100% not dry out quickly? One problem I’ve found with natural mascaras is how quickly they dry out, which really makes me feel like I’m not getting my money’s worth (especially when paying $25-30!). Thanks for this post!

  32. I too loved the 100% Pure and Well People
Mascaras, but I just tried Thrive Causemetics mascara and it is amazing. I have naturally long lashes but they are light. A tweezerman crimp and the thrive mascara, and I look like I put on falsies!

  33. That’s awesome, Barb! I’ve never heard of that brand before but will have to check it out. Thank you 🙂

  34. 100% Pure has been a godsend for me! My lashes fall out a lot from hyperthyroid so I’ve had like 3 lashes on each eye most of the time for the past decade. Every time they grow in I try to use mascara because I’m so excited they’re back, but then they all fall out again. *Sad face*

I used Eye Envy in desperation because they weren’t growing back this last time and I was freaking out. No lashes is no joke, everything gets in your eyes all the time without them.

Good news is, my lashes have grown back nice and thick, maybe better than they ever were. I tried 100% Pure (with a little fear) based on your recommendation and my lashes look amazing!!!! Best part is – they aren’t falling out at all this time! Thank you for this post, without it I might not have found this gorgeous product 🙂

  35. I totally agree with you regarding juicy beauty mascara .
I live in Italy and can’t find your products . I will try pure but from the website they don’t send to Italy

  36. I use Lavera bio mascara made in Germany and I like it a lot, but will try your “love its!” thanks for the info Nadia!

  37. Unfortunately I don’t think so. The only natural mascara I’ve seen that has a “water resistant” version is Pacifica though I haven’t tried it!

  38. Ooh I’ve never heard of that brand, Halle, but will have to see if it’s available here in the US! 🙂

  39. Hi Nadia, I love this post and can’t wait to try your top picks and find one that works for me! I have a question about Too Faced “Better Than Sex” mascara. It says it is vegan friendly, can you explain that a little? Further, would that be considered a natural mascara?
    Thank you!

  40. Hey, Amber! Vegan just means no animal products – it doesn’t mean it’s natural or even non-toxic (some non-toxic brands do use high-performing synthetic ingredients if they’re safe).

  41. I have been wearing Physicians Formula mascara and it is horrible. I bought it only because of its pure ingredients, but it puts black mark above your eyelids after a short time and clumps when you apply it.

  42. My favorite (I like it much better than 100% Pure) is Pure Anada mascara. Lengthens and adds volume, doesn’t flake or clump. And not expensive. You can get it for about C$13 a tube. Sample size is C$7, which I tend to get as I don’t use up a whole tube in 3 months time (the time you are supposed to switch your mascara for a new one). Best wishes!

  43. Well people is my favorite next to Pure Haven. Pure Haven is Organic and non toxic. Have you tried it. I have used lili lolo too and it’s not bad.
