DIY all-natural antioxidant turmeric face mask

Turmeric is renowned for its powerful antioxidant properties, and has been used in skincare for centuries. This DIY All-Natural Antioxidant Turmeric Face Mask protects skin from free radical damage with just a few simple ingredients. It also provides great moisture and a gentle exfoliation to boot! Let’s take a closer look…

I’ve been mixing things up lately.

It’s all because of the banana pancakes: they’ve inspired me. Yes, banana pancakes are my muse 🙂

So I’ve been adding turmeric to my morning warm lemon and cayenne pepper water. Now I drink warm lemon and cayenne pepper and turmeric and black pepper (because it increases the absorption of curcumin in turmeric by a whopping 400%!) water everyday when I wake up. It’s very orange and very yummy and very anti-inflammatory.

And really it’s only a matter of time before I try to put whatever new health food I’m into on my face. Because our skin is our body’s largest organ and we need to treat it right! … that and I’m always in the market for a new DIY.

Thus this DIY all-natural antioxidant turmeric face mask was born.

Turmeric’s potent antioxidant properties benefit the skin when applied topically just as they benefit the body when taken internally.

Our skin is constantly under free radical assault during the day from UV rays and air pollution. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals (which is why it’s so important to get a lot of them in your diet!). Topical antioxidants also help to keep skin clear by preventing the oxidation of skin sebum, which is a key player in acne.

Turmeric has a number of other benefits for the skin to boot: it has been used in traditional medicine to lighten skin and eliminate dark spots and is a great antibacterial agent.

Directions

Mix all of the ingredients together into a consistent paste.

Apply to clean, damp skin and allow to sit for 10-15 minutes.

Then wash off and apply a moisturizer (like a nourishing face oil).

And of course, admire your naturally beautiful skin while saying “I’m so clever!”

NOTE: Turmeric can temporarily stain the skin a yellowish hue. For this reason, I recommend applying the mask at night before bed. Your moisturizer will help to lift any remaining pigment.

  1. Last time a I used a handmade soap with turmeric and I loved what it did to my skin, I will definitely try face mask, thank you so much for the share Nadia, xoxo!

  2. I’ve never tried it so I just don’t know! You can try it and report back 🙂

  3. Can you use the turmeric essential oil in the mask or does it have to be the powder? I am new to using essential oils and am enjoying trying the different recipes.

  4. Also note for acne, that turmeric was shown in one study to improve oily skin by 24.76% after 3 months of daily application. So topically applied turmeric might be a miracle for clogged pores and hence acne. Combining it with a carrier oil such as jojoba oil will work the best, since it’ll help the active compounds in turmeric penetrate the skin more effectively (the great study above used a carrier oil itself).

  5. If you have dark skin 1/2 tsp turmeric is fine but if you have fair skin 1/4 is more than enough if you don’t want a yellow tint and for those who have light colored hair don’t apply to your eyebrows or hairline.

  6. If you apply turmeric that’s mixed only with water, there are chances your skin will develop slight burns. I say this with some conviction because, well, been there, done that 🙁 This may be what Kimberly was pointing at in her comment.
However, I have safely used turmeric mixed with coconut oil or with yogurt and have been getting amazing results in terms of skin tone correction and moisturizing.
