DIY all-natural antioxidant turmeric face mask

Turmeric is renowned for its powerful antioxidant properties, and has been used in skincare for centuries. This DIY All-Natural Antioxidant Turmeric Face Mask protects skin from free radical damage with just a few simple ingredients. It also provides great moisture and a gentle exfoliation to boot! Let’s take a closer look…

I’ve been mixing things up lately.

It’s all because of the banana pancakes: they’ve inspired me. Yes, banana pancakes are my muse 🙂

So I’ve been adding turmeric to my morning warm lemon and cayenne pepper water. Now I drink warm lemon and cayenne pepper and turmeric and black pepper (because it increases the absorption of curcumin in turmeric by a whopping 400%!) water everyday when I wake up. It’s very orange and very yummy and very anti-inflammatory.

And really it’s only a matter of time before I try to put whatever new health food I’m into on my face. Because our skin is our body’s largest organ and we need to treat it right! … that and I’m always in the market for a new DIY.

Thus this DIY all-natural antioxidant turmeric face mask was born.

Turmeric’s potent antioxidant properties benefit the skin when applied topically just as they benefit the body when taken internally.

Our skin is constantly under free radical assault during the day from UV rays and air pollution. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals (which is why it’s so important to get a lot of them in your diet!). Topical antioxidants also help to keep skin clear by preventing the oxidation of skin sebum, which is a key player in acne.

Turmeric has a number of other benefits for the skin to boot: it has been used in traditional medicine to lighten skin and eliminate dark spots and is a great antibacterial agent.

Directions

Mix all of the ingredients together into a consistent paste.

Apply to clean, damp skin and allow to sit for 10-15 minutes.

Then wash off and apply a moisturizer (like a nourishing face oil).

And of course, admire your naturally beautiful skin while saying “I’m so clever!”

NOTE: Turmeric can temporarily stain the skin a yellowish hue. For this reason, I recommend applying the mask at night before bed. Your moisturizer will help to lift any remaining pigment.

  1. I have tried this before, and it works wonders! It leaves my face feeling cleansed, nourished and very smooth . Thanks for the awesome idea, really helps. 😀 X

  2. i was hoping if you can helping with something. I have combination skin and I have a lot of acne and scars, I tried going for facials and nothing is working. Do you know anything that could help me.

  3. Nadia liked your article on Turmeric Going to make the facial mask and see if I like it.

  4. i also love turmeric and have seen many Ayurvedic skin remedies involving turmeric, so maybe it’s time I gave it a try! But, I cannot drink it in the morning because it makes me so sleepy! I now drink a turmeric tea at night, with water or boiled in milk as the traditional Ayurvedic remedy suggests. I mix it with ginger, cinnamon, and black pepper ofcourse! The first time I drank it, the effect was so strong I felt like I had taken a muscle relaxant. My 13 year old loves it as well and it has really helped him to get to sleep faster.

  5. Hi- please can u tell us more about drinking the tumeric in water. Does it help for loosing weight?

  6. Hey, Kim. Thanks for your comment. And yes, I agree not everything you eat should be applied your face (I was being sarcastic!). But I’ve only read great things about turmeric used topically and know it plays a big role in Ayurvedic skincare. Is there any particular reason why you don’t think it should be used on the skin?

  7. Hey Nadia…. I love everything you post EXCEPT this Tumeric Facial Mask… I would NOT suggest this to any of my clients… for so many reasons… Not everything that is good to take internally is meant for the face… Pore size differences, skin thickness, eye damage, and on… There is a reason that there are ingredients are not meant for the face….

  8. Over the summer I tried a turmeric mask. It stained my skin yellow and of course I decided to do this a few hours before work.

  9. Hi, Rebecca. That’s up to you! I’d say no more than weekly since the natural lactic acid in yogurt acts as a mild exfoliant.

  10. I’m looking forward to giving this a try –thanks!

I have a question about adding the turmeric and black pepper to your lemon/cayenne water…how much of them do you add? And would adding a bit of fat to the mix in order to make the turmeric more bioavailable be a good idea, or would it negate the purpose you’re drinking the lemon/cayenne in the first place?

Also, I’m wondering just how damaging the lemon’s acidity is to tooth enamel? Several years ago I drank from a straw daily for about a year and began to notice quite a bit of wrinkling around my mouth {mostly on the upper lip area}, resembling something like the effects of repeatedly puckering to draw on a cigarette…so I put the straw away and have been afraid to use it since. 😉 Which is the lesser evil…lemon juice on tooth enamel or looking like a long-time smoker??

    Thanks so much!

  11. Well rosehip oil is a dry oil so it could very well be drying your skin further. I’d try jojoba oil, shea butter, or vegetable glycerine for more intense moisture.

  12. Ok one more question! I’ve been doing OCM every night now for about 2 weeks with castor oil and jojoba oil and have seen some improvement with my oily acne prone skin, but still have some redness and inflammation from the pimples that haven’t gone away yet I’m not sure if it’s irritation or not so my question is do you recommend me switching to hemp seed oil? I’ve heard good reviews on it for oily acne skin and I had to cut down on castor since I saw it was irritating my skin.
    Please reply thank you!

  13. I know idea I was hoping you could help me with extremely dry skin. I have been using oil and rosehips oil and it is not helping. As a matter fact I believe my skin is becoming dryer if you can believe it. During the winter it is very dry and I just want to know what to do it’s becoming red and irritated when I try to apply cream’s

  14. Yes, that would do! Though I would personally choose organic and non-irradiated since irradiation decreases the potency of spices.

  15. I was just wondering what kind of Turmeric powder to use? Does it matter the brand? I found one in the spice section of my grocery store, could that do? Its and orangey yellow color, the color it should be.
