The Health Benefits of Warm Lemon & Cayenne Pepper Water
Detoxification Nutrition Real Food Recipes
Warm lemon and cayenne pepper water is touted as a detoxifying and metabolism-boosting natural remedy. Why? Does it actually work? And do you need to do some drastic “cleanse” to get all of the benefits? (Spoiler: NOPE!) Let’s take a closer look…
I want to be clear upfront: no, this is absolutely NOT a post about a cleanse where all you drink is lemon and cayenne pepper water for a week in the name of detoxification or to achieve drastic weight loss.
Eek, does that thought make me cringe!
While I’m all about detox, I believe in gentle boosting your body’s detox pathways and with a food-based approach. Yes, you can still eat and detox! (And eat and lose weight, for that matter.) YUM!
However, drinking a warm glass of water with fresh-squeezed lemon juice and cayenne pepper is something I do every morning to give my body’s detoxification pathways and metabolism a little boost.
So how does it work?
Lemon and cayenne pepper are one powerhouse duo with serious health benefits.
Both are great at giving the body’s detox pathways, digestion, and metabolism a boost.
Lemon
The vitamin C in lemon transforms toxins into digestible material. Lemons are also packed with antioxidants and electrolytes like potassium, calcium, and magnesium. This tart fruit is also known to stimulate the liver’s natural enzymes by helping to oxygenate the body.
Lemon also stimulates the secretion of gastric juices, aiding the digestion of your breakfast that will follow. Since proper digestion is absolutely critical to a healthy body, this drink is a great way to set the stage for a day of healthy digestion.
To boot, lemons, though acidic, helps neutralize the body’s pH by making it more alkaline. pH imbalance has been attributed to numerous disorders as well as chronic illness.
Cayenne pepper
Cayenne pepper stimulates the circulatory system by opening the capillaries, aids digestion, and helps regulate blood sugar. It can also increase your body temperature and speed up your metabolism.
NOTE: Be sure to always buy non-irradiated cayenne pepper (and all spices) since irradiation can reduce the health benefits!
I like to start each morning with a glass of warm water with lemon and cayenne pepper to get these benefits.
Though lemon and cayenne pepper have achieved quite a bit of fame thanks to “The Master Cleanse” — a protocol that involves drinking water, lemon, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup for a few days to detox and achieve quick weight loss (no, it doesn’t sound very pleasant to me either!) — you don’t need to do this drastic cleanse in order to reap the rewards.
I do a “mini master cleanse” each morning.
It’s such a super simple addition to your health and wellness routine and a great way to start the day off on the right foot.
So here’s what I do: sometime after waking but before eating breakfast, I warm a pint of water (slightly warmer than body temperature but not hot), juice half a lemon directly in the glass using a wooden citrus reamer, and top it off with a few sprinkles of non-irradiated cayenne pepper (since, again, the process of irradiation reduces the nutritional profile and natural medicinal properties of herbs and spices, and we don’t want that!). Lastly, I mix everything together and chug*. I follow this with about a half glass of plain water, and wait 15-30 minutes before eating breakfast to let the drink work its magic.
*Note: I use a glass drinking straw with this drink to keep the acidic lemon from wearing away my tooth enamel. If you choose to try or adopt this practice, I highly suggest investing in these straws. Unlike plastic straws, they will not leech any harmful chemicals.

No worries I’ll keep searching. I have more cayenne pepper than I know what to do with 🙂
Ooh cool. I’m sure you can but I really have no clue how much!
Hi Nadia,
I have cayenne pepper growing. Could I use this instead? If so, would have any idea of how much to use?
I’ve done it at other times of the day when my metabolism felt a little sluggy and I needed to speed things up (i.e. if I’m constipated). I really don’t have much of an opinion about doing it multiple times a day unless that’s ALL you’re consuming in a day (I do not think a cleanse with this drink is healthy — it’s too extreme for most individuals since one really should be in good health before undergoing such a restrictive cleanse.). But I certainly don’t think it’s necessary to drink this multiple times a day and worry that it could displace other healthy foods and beverages from your diet.
What are your thoughts about the pros / cons of drinking hot water with lemon and cayenne more than once a day? Morning and evening? Morning, midday, evening? Any thoughts or insights appreciated! : )
Thanks for the articles. I like to know more about this type of articles.
how long does it take for the weight loss to start happeneing ?
Well it’s not an extreme disgust “about people using such a cleanse to lose weight”, it’s a disgust for the cleanse – I wouldn’t do it! This is my blog, so I express my opinions here.
Also, if someone wanted to lose weight, simply drinking lemon and cayenne pepper water all day long would be an unhealthy way to do so. I would never advise anyone do that to achieve weight loss. And individuals should only undertake such an extreme cleanse if they’re already in good health and all of their body’s detoxification pathways are clear, otherwise the toxins will simply circulate and reabsorb, causing even more problems than if they had just stayed put.
I don’t do extreme cleanses. And I have a perfect body… so loosing weight would NOT be ideal for me. With that said.. I don’t disregard those that do.
I love your information in this page.. but when I first read your extreme disgust about people using such cleanse to loose weight…. I almost did not continue reading.
Many people search sites for exactly the weekly method. If you choose not to place such method to loose weight.. NO need to degrade it…or those who do it. There is something for everyone.
Its good to place an opinion without being so offensive about an endeavor that many like to do. You asked to share our thoughts: & there you have it.. . Thanks.
Regarding the health of enamel, can lemon essential oil be used instead of a fresh lemon?

I have been dizzy for 2 years now. I went to so many doctors and they took some blood test checked everything and the result came out right. I had no problem at all. Then they said that I am depressed. That’s where the dizziness comes from. I would like to know can drink cayenne pepper. Will it help me to get rid of the dizziness for good.
Its been three weeks drinking warm lemon and cayenne water in the morning before breakfast,it really works wonders…i hav lost 3kg
I could not find recipe for cayenne pepper and lemon drink. I am not sure on how much pepper to used. Also, i ask about non-irradiated pepper and the people did not know or understood what this was or the meaning. Please advise me of the meaning so I will have a better understanding of what I am doing.
I’ve gotten off of this habit for almost a year now, and slowly getting back into it. Hadn’t been using lemon, but what I would do is a tablespoon of the Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar, a teaspoon of cayenne pepper (organic if able), and a 1/4 teaspoon of cinnemon as that has benefits by itself (regulation of blood sugar is one I’ve heard, good since diabetes has run in the family in dad’s side).
Thought about turmeric this morning but didn’t, and here I read the comments and someone suggested it so I could try that too.
Think my other error was making the water too hot this morning, so will need to cool that down next time.
But why do you warm the water?
