Is your smoothie doing your skin more harm than good?

I know it sounds ironic!

How could the poster child of healthy eating (the smoothie) possibly be contributing to your breakouts? Wouldn’t it be just the opposite?

This is where I was mistaken, and where I see so many other women going wrong on their quest for clear skin from within: they’re loading their diets up with sweet fruits without realizing that this is spiking their blood sugar levels and with that, perpetuating their acne.

And not just sweet fruits, but carbs generally — especially starchy carbs — which are broken down into glucose (a.k.a. sugar!) once digested.

Because elevated blood sugar levels stimulate those hormones that are the biggest and baddest contributors to acne. We’re looking at you, insulin and androgens!

Plus, blood sugar spikes (and the inevitable crash that follows) are inflammatory, stressful to the body, suppress the immune system, and rob the skin of certain key nutrients like the antioxidant vitamins C and E.

None of this bodes well for acne-prone skin (or any type of skin, really).

This is why smoothies make the perfect mini example of how meals can be either be assembled to aggravate breakouts… or banish them by balancing the root causes of acne within.

So let’s dig in!

Clear Skin Smoothie Essentials

Aside from a great blender (my Vitamix is going on a decade and still top “must-have” household item!), you’ll need:

LEAFY GREENS

Leafy greens contain specific enzymes required by the liver for hormone detoxification, aiding hormonal balance. They’re also incredibly nutrient-dense.

Try adding 1/4-1/2 cup to each smoothie.

Pro tip: You can barely taste frozen organic greens (pinky promise!), which is especially why I consider them essential in any clear skin smoothie. If you can hardly taste them, there’s really no reason not to include them, right!? I always keep frozen organic chopped spinach and kale stocked in my freezer for smoothies.

PROTEIN

Collagen Gelatin Superfood for healthy skin

Protein slows glucose absorption into the bloodstream and so helps maintain balanced blood sugar levels. So in other words, it helps balance out the natural sugars from any fruits in your smoothie.

Aim to include 15-20 g of protein with each smoothie.

Note: Plant-based protein powders can cause bloating and gas. If this is the case for you, or if you struggle with digestive issues, I recommend using collagen peptides as your protein powder. (More info below!)

FIBER

Like protein, fiber slows glucose absorption into the bloodstream and so helps maintain balanced blood sugar levels. Fiber is also key for digestive health, keeping you regular (take note, constipated ladies!), which is essential for the elimination of toxins and detoxed hormones.

Fruits and vegetables (including greens) come packaged with fiber, but I suggest adding 1-2 tablespoons of chia seeds or 1 tablespoon of acacia fiber for a bit more.

HEALTHY FATS

Avocado superfood for healthy skin

One last time! Like protein and fiber, fat slows glucose absorption into the bloodstream and so helps maintain balanced blood sugar levels. Fat also keeps skin soft and supple, and is essential for healthy hormones.

Try adding 1/2 an avocado, a small handful of nuts, or 1 tablespoon of nut butter, full-fat coconut milk / cream, or coconut oil.

COLLAGEN PEPTIDES

My favorite single-ingredient source of protein! No sneaky sugars or carbs, no sketchy ingredients. Not only is it fantastic for your skin, hair, and joints, but collagen is considered a gut-healing superfood.

Plus, whereas a lot of other (especially plant-based protein powders) can be difficult to digest and cause a lot of gas, collagen does not have the same effect. Not an issue for everyone, but something to consider if you struggle with digestive issues and gas generally!

BERRIES

In addition to being incredibly rich in skin-protecting antioxidants, berries are much lower in sugar compared to other fruits. Raspberries are also especially fiber-full.

I always keep frozen organic strawberries and wild blueberries (MUCH more flavorful and have more antioxidants than regular blueberries) in my freezer – frozen organic produce is often much more reasonably priced than fresh, but just as nutritious.

FROZEN CAULIFLOWER

Cauliflower in a smoothie!? Yes! Like greens, you can hardly taste frozen cauliflower, and it provides the same creaminess as banana but with way less sugar.

Plus cauliflower is a cruciferous vegetable, which are jam-packed with DIM, an antioxidant that specifically helps the body detox estrogen and bring it back into balance. DIM even comes in supplemental form and is commonly taken by those struggling with PCOS and acne with great results.

CHLORELLA & SPIRULINA

Both of these algae (don’t let that scare you away!) help calm inflammation, aid detoxification, and provide nutrients like iron, magnesium, and potassium.

Plus, they’re a decent source of anti-inflammatory omega-3 essential fatty acids.

CHIA SEEDS

Chia seeds basically ARE fiber – the grams of total carbohydrates equal the grams of fiber – making them a great source of additional fiber. They’re also easy on the digestive system and provide healthy fats, too.
