If you wanted a little more detail, I could tell you that it’s now so hot that I leave a little sweat mark on any surface I come into contact with. But that’s just gross. And I’m a lady. So shhh don’t tell anybody.

With all the extra sweating happening these days, it’s extra important to stay hydrated.

Proper hydration is absolutely vital to good health. In fact, you may just be amazed at the difference in your physical and mental health once you start drinking the proper amount of water.

Water makes up 55-60% of our body bodies and is responsible for a number of processes from flushing toxins to transporting nutrients within cells and maintaining normal electrical properties of cells. It’s also essential for digestion and the body’s natural healing processes.

This homemade and healthy electrolyte drink is a tasty way to ensure you’ll be hydrated all summer long.

And it’s filled with just a few all-natural ingredients, making it a far better option than those nasty, neon, store-bought electrolyte sports drinks (read: those “thirst quenching” drinks that end in -ade) which are a stew of unhealthy ingredients like sugar, high fructose corn syrup, brominated vegetable oil (which has actually been banned in some countries), and artificial colors (some of which have also been banned in other countries).

About these ingredients

Mineral-rich sea salt: I know this one’s always a head-scratcher since many people believe salt dehydrates, which it does in excess. But in moderation salt actually enables cell hydration as salts = electrolytes and electrolytes help maintain the balance of fluids between the intracellular (inside the cell) and extracellular (outside the cell) environments. This balance is necessary for hydration as well as nerve impluses, muscle function, and pH balance. You will want to use a high-quality, mineral-rich sea salt such as pink Himalayan sea salt, Real Salt, or Celtic sea saltug rather than typical table salt, which is highly refined and stripped of its mineral content.

Citrus juice: Citrus fruits contain calcium and potassium, which, when combined with salt, provide a balance of pH and fluid levels in the body.

Raw honey: Raw honey is filled with minerals and antioxidants, making it a healthy alternative to cane sugar. The natural sugars found in raw honey are quickly converted to energy, making it an especially great addition if you’re going to be using this drink during sports or exercise.

Filtered water: This one’s a little more obvious!

Directions

Simply combine all ingredients in a jar, shake, and enjoy!

  1. I’m 65 and workout vigorously at least 4 times a week and I sweat plenty, so this recipe will work out nicely. If I don’t have something to replace my electrolytes then I’m guaranteed to get leg cramps while sleeping. I love anything that’s natural and I can’t say enough about honey.   2. You have left out a vital ingredient for an electrolyte drink, GLUCOSE.

    I have to take 3 glasses of electrolyte drink every day to top up after an operation and glucose is a vital ingredient

  3. Can you leave the honey out of the recipe and how often can you drink this? I urinate often and drink approximately 1500ml of water per day so I am guessing I need a little extra salt at least while drinking some water.

  4. Can definitely be left out! If you’re looking for a little sweetness – for taste AND the sugars for the quick burst of energy – you could use maple syrup as a vegan-friendly option.

  6. I love doing this!!! Though I tend to use my grade B maple syrup instead of honey. Just a flavor preference.

    I’ve never been a big soda/juice drinker (always prefered water), but I love this flavor infused water and how it makes me feel. Sometimes it gets too hot for water to make me feel better. Insert this drink. Seriously. Works like a charm.
